One day an. English schoolboy was taken to the Headmaster by his teacher because he didn’t do his lessons.
“My, boy” the headmaster said, “I am afraid you do not like to work. I suppose you’re happier not working. Now I want you to be happy”. He took the boy to the next room. There he told him to sit on chair, saying, “I must write something, and have no time to talk with you. But you can watch me at work, which won’t be difficult for you. And I hope you will be very happy for a few hours having nothing to do”.
The boy was glad, and he enjoyed an hour doing nothing. But soon things began to look less pleasant. The book looked round the room, and at last decided to take a book that was lying on the table near him but the headmaster stopped him, “You wanted to do nothing. So you see, you must not read”.
The boy tried to speak to the headmaster; but he got no answer. They sat for three hours. Then the headmaster finished his work and prepared to go out.
“Come”, he said, “Let us go down into the playground”. The boy, who was by this time very tired of doing nothing, gladly agreed. When he saw the school friends he decided to join then but the headmaster stopped him saying, “Playing is doing something, and you must do nothing, so you cannot join your school friends in their games”
This was too much for the boy, and he burst into lears.
