Пятая планета была очень занятная. Она оказалась меньше всех. На ней только и помещалось что фонарь да фонарщик.
|
The fifth planet was very strange. It was the smallest of all. There was just enough room on it for a street lamp and a lamplighter.
|
Маленький принц никак не мог понять, для чего на крохотной, затерявшейся в небе планетке,
|
The little prince was not able to reach any explanation of the use of a street lamp and a lamplighter, somewhere in the heavens,
|
где нет ни домов, ни жителей, нужны фонарь и фонарщик. Но он подумал:
|
on a planet which had no people, and not one house. But he said to himself, nevertheless:
|
"Может быть, этот человек и нелеп. Но он не так нелеп, как король, честолюбец, делец и пьяница.
|
"It may well be that this man is absurd. But he is not so absurd as the king, the conceited man, the businessman, and the tippler. For at least his work has some meaning.
|
В его работе все-таки есть смысл. Когда он зажигает свой фонарь - как будто рождается еще одна звезда или цветок. А когда он гасит фонарь - как будто звезда или цветок засыпают.
|
When he lights his street lamp, it is as if he brought one more star to life, or one flower. When he puts out his lamp, he sends the flower, or the star, to sleep.

Прекрасное занятие.
|
That is a beautiful occupation.
|
Это по-настоящему полезно, потому что красиво".
|
And since it is beautiful, it is truly useful."
|
И, поравнявшись с этой планеткой, он почтительно поклонился фонарщику.
|
When he arrived on the planet he respectfully saluted the lamplighter.
|
- Добрый день, - сказал он. - Почему ты сейчас погасил фонарь?
|
"Good morning. Why have you just put out your lamp?"
|
- Такой уговор, - ответил фонарщик. - Добрый день.
|
"Those are the orders," replied the lamplighter. "Good morning."
|
- А что это за уговор?
|
"What are the orders?"
|
- Гасить фонарь. Добрый вечер.
|
"The orders are that I put out my lamp. Good evening."
|
И он снова засветил фонарь.
|
And he lighted his lamp again.
|
- Зачем же ты опять его зажег?
|
"But why have you just lighted it again?"
|
- Такой уговор, - повторил фонарщик.
|
"Those are the orders," replied the lamplighter.
|
- Не понимаю, - признался Маленький принц.
|
"I do not understand," said the little prince.
|
- И понимать нечего, - сказал фонарщик, - уговор есть уговор. Добрый день.
|
"There is nothing to understand," said the lamplighter. "Orders are orders. Good morning."
|
И погасил фонарь. Потом красным клетчатым платком утер пот со лба и сказал:
|
And he put out his lamp. Then he mopped his forehead with a handkerchief decorated with red squares.
|
- Тяжкое у меня ремесло. Когда-то это имело смысл. Я гасил фонарь по утрам, а вечером опять зажигал. У меня оставался день, чтобы отдохнуть, и ночь, что бы выспаться...
|
"I follow a terrible profession. In the old days it was reasonable. I put the lamp out in the morning, and in the evening I lighted it again. I had the rest of the day for relaxation and the rest of the night for sleep."
|
- А потом уговор переменился?
|
"And the orders have been changed since that time?"
|
- Уговор не менялся, - сказал фонарщик. - В том-то и беда! Моя планета год от году вращается все быстрее, а уговор остается прежний.
|
"The orders have not been changed," said the lamplighter. "That is the tragedy! From year to year the planet has turned more rapidly and the orders have not been changed!"
|
- И как же теперь? - спросил Маленький принц.
|
"Then what?" asked the little prince.
|
- Да вот так. Планета делает полный оборот за одну минуту, и у меня нет ни секунды передышки. Каждую минуту я гашу фонарь и опять его зажигаю.
|
"Then—the planet now makes a complete turn every minute, and I no longer have a single second for repose. Once every minute I have to light my lamp and put it out!"
|
- Вот забавно! Значит, у тебя день длится всего одну минуту!
|
"That is very funny! A day lasts only one minute, here where you live!"
|
- Ничего тут нет забавного, - возразил фонарщик. - Мы с тобой разговариваем уже целый месяц.
|
"It is not funny at all!" said the lamplighter. "While we have been talking together a month has gone by."
|
- Целый месяц?!
|
"A month?"
|
- Ну да. Тридцать минут. Тридцать дней. Добрый вечер!
|
"Yes, a month. Thirty minutes. Thirty days. Good evening."
|
И он опять засветил фонарь.
|
And he lighted his lamp again.
|
Маленький принц смотрел на фонарщика, и ему все больше нравился этот человек, который был так верен своему слову. Маленький принц вспомнил, как он когда-то переставлял стул с места на место, чтобы лишний раз поглядеть на закат солнца.
|
As the little prince watched him, he felt that he loved this lamplighter who was so faithful to his orders. He remembered the sunsets which he himself had gone to seek, in other days, merely by pulling up his chair;
|
И ему захотелось помочь другу.
|
and he wanted to help his friend.
|
- Послушай, - сказал он фонарщику, - я знаю средство: ты можешь отдыхать, когда только захочешь...
|
"You know," he said, "I can tell you a way you can rest whenever you want to..."
|
- Мне все время хочется отдыхать, - сказал фонарщик.
|
"I always want to rest," said the lamplighter.
|
Ведь можно быть верным слову и все-таки ленивым.
|
For it is possible for a man to be faithful and lazy at the same time.
|
|
The little prince went on with his explanation:
|
- Твоя планетка такая крохотная, - продолжал Маленький принц, - ты можешь обойти ее в три шага. И просто нужно идти с такой скоростью, чтобы все время оставаться на солнце. Когда захочется отдохнуть, ты просто все иди, иди... И день будет тянуться столько времени, сколько ты пожелаешь.

"Your planet is so small that three strides will take you all the way around it. To be always in the sunshine, you need only walk along rather slowly. When you want to rest, you will walk—and the day will last as long as you like."
|
- Ну, от этого мне мало толку, - сказал фонарщик. - Больше всего на свете я люблю спать.
|
"That doesn't do me much good," said the lamplighter. "The one thing I love in life is to sleep."
|
- Тогда плохо твое дело, - посочувствовал Маленький принц.
|
"Then you're unlucky," said the little prince.
|
- Плохо мое дело, - подтвердил фонарщик. - Добрый день.
|
"I am unlucky," said the lamplighter. "Good morning."
|
И погасил фонарь.
|
And he put out his lamp.
|
"Вот человек, - сказал себе Маленький принц, продолжая путь, - вот человек, которого все стали бы презирать - и король, и честолюбец, и пьяница, и делец. А между тем из них всех он один, по-моему, не смешон. Может быть, потому, что он думает не только о себе".
|
"That man," said the little prince to himself, as he continued farther on his journey, "that man would be scorned by all the others: by the king, by the conceited man, by the tippler, by the businessman. Nevertheless he is the only one of them all who does not seem to me ridiculous. Perhaps that is because he is thinking of something else besides himself."

Маленький принц вздохнул.
|
He breathed a sigh of regret, and said to himself, again:
|
"Вот бы с кем подружиться, - подумал он еще. - Но его планетка уж очень крохотная. Там нет места для двоих..."
|
"That man is the only one of them all whom I could have made my friend. But his planet is indeed too small. There is no room on it for two people..."
|
Он не смел себе признаться в том, что больше всего жалеет об этой чудесной планетке еще по одной причине: за двадцать четыре часа на ней можно любоваться закатом тысячу четыреста сорок раз!

What the little prince did not dare confess was that he was sorry most of all to leave this planet, because it was blest every day with 1440 sunsets!
