Where is Roxy?
After classes Chloe arrives home, makes a cup of coffee and goes to her bedroom. Everything is quiet and she plays with her pet rats. Chloe has two rats called Zena and Roxy. They live in a cage in Chloe's bedroom. Chloe knows that most people don't like rats. A year ago, Chloe didn't like rats either. Once, her friend Martin showed Chloe his rats and Chloe saw how intelligent and affectionate they were. When one of Martin's rats had babies, Chloe asked her mum if she could have two pet rats for her birthday present. Her parents didn't like it, but Chloe got an excellent school report and they decided to give Chloe that present.
'There’s one very important rule,' said Chloe's mum. 'The rats live in your bedroom and never go to other rooms, especially the kitchen!'
In her room, Chloe opened the cage. She picked up Roxy and put her on the floor. Then she picked up Zena and put her on her shoulder. Roxy loved to explore climbing furniture and going under Chloe's bed. Zena was quieter and liked sitting on Chloe's shoulder.
Someone knocked on the door. 'Hi, Chloe,' called Mum. 'Mum, come in.'
'I'm going to my aerobics class. I'll return at seven. Dad's on his way home. He's
making pasta tonight.' 'OK, Mum', Chloe replied.
Mum went away. Chloe called for Roxy. She started to search the house but she didn’t find Roxy.
When Dad came, they looked all over the house but couldn't find Roxy anywhere. Soon Mum came. She was smiling and Roxy was on her shoulder. When she arrived at the gym and opened her bag, she found Roxy sleeping in one of her shoes. She picked her up for the first time and understood that she liked rats too.

London is my hometown
If you come to London in the evening or on Sunday, the streets are almost busy. The groceries are open and life goes on as usual. Amina stands behind the counter in her little grocer’s shop in the corner. Her two children play in the back. Most of her customers are Asians, two or three are Europeans. “We are open every day,” she says. “I open the shop at 9.30 every day, except Sundays, when I open it at 10 o’clock. The shop closes at 10.30 in the evening — again Sunday is different, we close at 5 o’clock. Of course I close in the middle of the day for a good long break. I would like to close the shop altogether on Sundays, but it is not possible. There is too much competition here. We are saving up to buy a bigger shop with a back garden for the children to play in while I am working. We don’t want to move far away, because the people are friendly here. There is no real prejudice against us. We try to fit into the English way of life as much as possible. I am thinking of wearing English clothes, though I am too fond of my sari. The children are a little divided. They have been on one trip to India, where my parents still live. They liked it very much there, but when we came back to London, they settled down very quickly.

The Driver
Anna Miller is a bus driver. She drives a bus in the city of Philadelphia. She works the night shift. She starts working at 10:00 at night and gets off at 6:00 in the morning. In the world of bus driving, this is sometimes called third shift. Anna has been driving a bus for 15 years. She started when she was 23 years old. She loves her job most of the time. She gets to see the beautiful city from her seat. She gets to meet all kinds of people. There is the guitar player. People call him Get Low. That is because he likes to play the guitar on his knees. If the bus is not too crowded, Get Low plays in the back of the bus. The bus is seldom crowded at night. He likes to warm up on the bus before shows. There is the woman who works at the roll factory. Each day the “Roll Lady” brings Anna a bag of fresh, soft rolls. They fill the bus with a wonderful smell! Sometimes Anna’s job is hard. One time, a young woman left her sleeping baby on the bus. There was a note on the baby's blanket asking for help. Anna had to call the police. Another time, a teenaged boy stole money from Anna on the bus. He had a fake gun. Anna thought it was real. She was very scared. Occasionally, driving the bus can be scary. But most of the time, driving the bus is great. Anna does not want to work anywhere else.

Canada
Canada is the second biggest country in the world, second only to Russia. In fact, Canada is bigger than the entire European Union put together! There are many interesting facts about Canada, some may surprise you! The country is called "The Great White North"! Canada has ten provinces and three territories. It also has six time zones! Its capital city is Ottawa. Ottawa is in the province of Ontario. It has a population of 36 million people. This is small compared to other countries. It is also small considering its large size! Over 80% of the population live near the United States border. The Canadian and US border is the largest border in the world. Over 30% of
the country is a forest. And Canada has 10% of the world's forests! Canada also has more lake areas than any other country in the world. Canada is a very young country. Canada became a country only in 1867. The country celebrated its 150 birthday in July 2017. July 1 is the Canada Day. People all across the country celebrate by wearing red and white. Red and white are the national colours shown on its flag. Canada was first discovered by the French explorer, Jacques Cartier in 1534. Of course, people had been living in Canada long before that. Canada's national animal is a beaver! And it has two national languages, both English and French. But only two provinces are officially French speaking, Quebec and New Brunswick. Canada is still strongly tied to the country of England. Like Australia, Canada celebrates the Queen of England as their Queen too!

New York
New York is one of the largest cities in the world. Its population is over 11 million people. New York is an industrial and cultural center of the country. Most business is centered in Manhattan Island. The whole area is very small, that's why the sky-scrapers were invented in New York and, especially, in Wall Street. Wall Street is a narrow street with big houses, but it is well known all over the world as the busiest street in the USA. People do business there. There are two more world-famous streets — Broadway and Fifth Avenue. Broadway is the center of the theatres and night life. It is known as "The Great White Way" because of the electric signs which turn night into day. It is the city that never goes to sleep. Buses and sub-way run all night. There are many drugstores and restaurants which never close their doors. There are cinemas with films that start at midnight. Fifth Avenue is the great shopping, hotel, and club avenue. There are many places of interest in New York. They are: the Statue of Liberty, the United Nations Building, Empire State Building, Columbia University, City Hall, New York Public Library and others. When you come to New York you see lots of cars, big and small, black and yellow, old and modern you do not see any trees or flowers in the streets, but only cars. You'll see and hear advertisements everywhere. There is no getting away from them.
The whole area of Manhattan Island is a veryarea.
