Development of Contemporary Political Life in Turkey: Sociological Analysis of the Hero Leaders and 
Bahadır in Contemporary Turkey 
Societies need effective leaders to survive and adapt to changing conditions in a changing world. 
Due to the nature of human beings, wherever collective action is taken, someone who is heard comes to the 
forefront in making decisions. In this context, leadership and leaders are of great importance for individuals, 
organizations, groups, institutions and the whole society in almost every condition and in almost every 
society. From the most general point of view, it can be said that leaders are the ones who determine effective 
strategies, missions and visions to their communities and businesses or members of the organization. 
There are many definitions of leadership. While making these definitions, individual characteristics 
and behaviours, power of influence over other people, interaction style and role relationships with other 
people, and perceptions of others about the legitimation of the task, influence, authority and power related to 
the management position are taken into consideration (Şişman, 2002). According to a definition, the leader is 
the person who absorbs the uncertainty in the environment (Çeltek, 2004). In another definition, the leader is 
portrayed as motivating, impressive, able to give good examples and lead the way (Besimler, 2004). 
On the other hand, another word related to the concept of leader is Bahadır. The word Bahadır is 
used in the Altaic languages to mean ―valiant, hero, warrior‖. A good leader should contain the 
characteristics of bravery, fearlessness, alpine, bravery and warfare that Bahadır contains. However, not 
every leader is a Bahadır. On the other hand, Bahadır is a person who has some leadership qualities. 
Charismatic leaders, in particular, have characteristics which are largely emphasized in the concept of 
Bahadır. 
In this study, our recent political history will be examined with sociological dimensions on the basis 
of the concept of leader, leadership, types of leadership and Bahadır.
