Franchising*, a practice applied to small business, has increased
in recent years. Franchising combines the economic efficiencies of
the large corporation with the benefits of local ownership. In this
transaction*, a large company allows an individual or a small group
of proprietors to use its name in exchange for a percentage of the
profit. The proprietor, who is usually not an employee* of the par-
ent* company, is responsible for the management and operation
of one unit of the larger chain*. The individual owner must also
assume the risk connected with the enterprise.
Franchising has costs as well as benefits for the economy. The
rise of chain stores is the source of the development of partnership.
Chain stores (buying in large quantities and selling a high volume)
make it possible to sell goods at lower prices than small-owner
stores. Chain supermarkets using low prices car attract more cus-
tomers.
Nevertheless some sole proprietors join forces with others and
form cooperatives.
