distinguishing feature of the motion module from the general industrial drive
is the use of the motor shaft as one of the elements of a mechanical motion
converter. Examples of motion modules are motor-reducer, motor-wheel, motor-
drum, electrospindle.
To create modern technological machines intended for automated machine
building, a variety of mechatronic motion modules are needed that satisfy a
number requirements: high accuracy of implementation of executive move-
ments, reliability, durability, workability in the presence
of various types of
disturbances and over a wide range of ambient temperatures.
Requirements for the development of efforts, accuracy and speed of execu-
tive movements are dictated by the features of an automated technological
operation, and the requirement to minimize the size of the mechatronic module
of motion is the need to integrate it into a technological machine.
An attempt to synthesize a mechatronic module of motion from existing
commercially available components can lead to technically and economically
inefficient solutions. Therefore, it is more rational
to design a specialized
mechatronic module of motion that most fully meets its official purpose.
So more rational is the design specialized mechatronic module of motion
that best meets his official appointment. Mechatronic modules of motion are
functional «cubes» from which you can compose complex mechatronic system.
Examples of mechatronic motion modules: mechatronic motion modules
based on electric motors of angular and linear
motion and various motion
transducers (helical, worm, planetary, wave, etc.), gearless mechatronic motion
modules, gearless rotary tables.
With the advent of electric motors and the beginning of a new era in the
mechanization of technological processes, the question arose about the need for
a broad reduction in the rotational frequencies of electric motors and obtaining
the necessary torque. Many companies have developed various designs,
ranging from belt and chain gears and ending with a variety of gear reducers.
The drawback of most of these designs was their extremely cumbersome and
inconvenient installation.
In 1927 the firm «Bauer» developed a fundamentally new design – a geared
motor that combined an electric motor and a converter into one compact design
module movement (reducer) and is now widely used. Since then, a huge range
of different types of geared motors has appeared for
a variety of application
conditions, which allow us to find the optimal solution in each specific drive
problem.
Thus, the St. Petersburg Scientific and Technological Center «Reduktor»
(STC «Reduktor») produces single-, two- and three-stage motor-reducers:
cylindrical (MC, MC2C, MC3C, MC2B, MC3D with a gear ratio U = 1.6...12.5,

the speed of the output shaft n
2
= 450...3.55 rpm and the torque at the output
shaft T
2
= 18...8530 Nm) [7].
Moscow Scientific and Technological Center «Privodnaya Tekhnika» (STC
«Privodnaya Tekhnika») produces single- and two-stage motor-reducers: worm
gears (7MWG with U = 7...10000; n
2
= 200...0.14 rpm, T
2
= 3.9...2941 Nm and
electric motor power P
1
= 0.09...15 kW), cylinder-worm (7MChC with U =
60...610, n
2
= 23.3...0.8 rpm, T
2
= 24...3984 Nm and P
1
= 0.02...7.5 kW) and
cylindrical coaxial (4MCs with n
2
= 28...40 rpm and P
1
= 0.55...18.5 kW) [7].
Many foreign companies, for example, MOTOVARIO, VARVEL, MAXON,
etc. produce different gearmotors. MAXON
manufactures electric motors,
cylindrical and planetary reducers and on their basis motor-reducers, which,
if necessary, equipped with photo-pulse sensors (PhPS), resolvers and brakes.

shows the block-modular motor connection system for various types of
plan cylindrical gearboxes, as well as digital magnetic and digital photoimpulse
sensors.
Figure 1.4 – Вlock-modular motor system
The application of the block-modular principle of the design of motor-
reducers allows combining in the module the motors
and motion transducers
of various types and capacities, thus providing a wide range of mechanical
characteristics of the module for driving in rotation and torque.
The structural combination of the electric motor and the motion transducer
into a single compact electric drive – the geared motor has a number of
advantages in comparison with the outdated connection system of the electric
motor and the drive converter through the coupling. This is a significant
reduction in overall dimensions, a substantial
reduction in the number of
connecting parts and costs for installation, debugging and start-up.

Thus, the geared motor is currently one of the most common types of
electric drive. Every year millions of pieces of motor-reducers of different
types and designs are produced all over the world, which allows satisfying all
conceivable customer needs.
