IELTS WRITING

There are some recommendations for higher score in IELTS Writing Modules. The IELTS Academic and General Writing Modules are similar in some ways and different in others. Whichever test you do, you have one hour to complete two tasks. It is the nature of the tasks that makes them different. You can see this clearly in the chart below:

General (Task 1): writing a letter in response to a situation – informal, semi-formal, or formal (minimum 150 words). Academic (Task 1): interpreting, describing, or comparing information presented in graphic form - a diagram, bar chart, line graph, pie chart or table (minimum 150 words).
General (Task 2): writing a more personal essay – possible informal style (minimum 250 words). Academic (Task 2): writing an essay on a general academic topic – formal style (minimum 250 words).
In both cases, your score is based on three fundamental criteria:
Content: How well do you r present your arguments, ideas and evidence?
Quality: How effectively are you able to communicate your ideas and thoughts?
Technical Aspects: How correct is your grammar? How rich is your vocabulary? How varied are your sentences?
In the IELTS Academic Task 1, you must be able to identify, understand and describe various types of graphic information. This is considered an important academic skill, because it shows you can intelligently and clearly interpret and describe data presented in charts, tables, graphs and diagrams. If you have written your answer very well, even someone who cannot see the graphic should be able to understand what happened.
To prepare yourself to complete Task 1, follow the next five steps : Learn to recognize and identify different graphic forms, such as line graphs, bar charts, pie charts, etc. Know what key information, comparisons and trends to look out for. Practice using the specific vocabulary required to describe those trends. Learn how to follow a plan to start, complete and finish your answer. At first, do not time yourself. Later, once you've got the hang of it, time yourself and make sure you finish in 20 minutes. Know what NOT to include in your response.
By following the steps above, you will be prepared and confident, no matter what type of question appears in Task 1 of your actual IELTS exam.
STEPS 1 and 2 – IDENTIFY TYPES OF CHARTS, LOOK FOR TRENDS
