Men occupy a very small place upon the Earth.

Если бы два миллиарда ее жителей сошлись и стали сплошной толпой, как на митинге, все они без труда уместились бы на пространстве размером двадцать миль в длину и двадцать в ширину.

If the two billion inhabitants who people its surface were all to stand upright and somewhat crowded together, as they do for some big public assembly, they could easily be put into one public square twenty miles long and twenty miles wide.

All humanity could be piled up on a small Pacific islet.
|
Взрослые вам, конечно, не поверят. Они воображают, что занимают очень много места.

The grown-ups, to be sure, will not believe you when you tell them that. They imagine that they fill a great deal of space.

Они кажутся сами себе величественными, как баобабы. А вы посоветуйте им сделать точный расчет.

They fancy themselves as important as the baobabs. You should advise them, then, to make their own calculations.

Им это понравится, они ведь обожают цифры. Вы же не тратьте время на эту арифметику. Это ни к чему. Вы и без того мне верите.

They adore figures, and that will please them. But do not waste your time on this extra task. It is unnecessary. You have, I know, confidence in me.

Итак, попав на землю, Маленький принц не увидел ни души и очень удивился.
|
When the little prince arrived on the Earth, he was very much surprised not to see any people.
|
Он подумал даже, что залетел по ошибке на какую-то другую планету. Но тут в песке шевельнулось колечко цвета лунного луча.
|
He was beginning to be afraid he had come to the wrong planet, when a coil of gold, the colour of the moonlight, flashed across the sand.
|
- Добрый вечер, - сказал на всякий случай Маленький принц.
|
"Good evening," said the little prince courteously.
|
- Добрый вечер, - ответила змея.
|
"Good evening," said the snake.
|
- На какую это планету я попал?
|
"What planet is this on which I have come down?" asked the little prince.
|
- На Землю, - сказала змея. - В Африку.
|
"This is the Earth; this is Africa," the snake answered.
|
- Вот как. А разве на Земле нет людей?
|
"Ah! Then there are no people on the Earth?"
|
- Это пустыня. В пустынях никто не живет. Но Земля большая.
|
"This is the desert. There are no people in the desert. The Earth is large," said the snake.
|
Маленький принц сел на камень и поднял глаза к небу.
|
The little prince sat down on a stone, and raised his eyes toward the sky.
|
- Хотел бы я знать, зачем звезды светятся, - задумчиво сказал он. - Наверно, затем, чтобы рано или поздно каждый мог вновь отыскать свою. Смотри, вот моя планета - как раз прямо над нами... Но как до нее далеко!
|
"I wonder," he said, "whether the stars are set alight in heaven so that one day each one of us may find his own again... Look at my planet. It is right there above us. But how far away it is!"
|
- Красивая планета, - сказала змея. - А что ты будешь делать здесь, на Земле?
|
"It is beautiful," the snake said. "What has brought you here?"
|
- Я поссорился со своим цветком, - признался Маленький принц.
|
"I have been having some trouble with a flower," said the little prince.
|
- А, вот оно что...
|
"Ah!" said the snake.
|
И оба умолкли.
|
And they were both silent.
|
- А где же люди? - вновь заговорил наконец Маленький принц. - В пустыне все-таки одиноко...
|
"Where are the men?" the little prince at last took up the conversation again. "It is a little lonely in the desert..."
|
- Среди людей тоже одиноко, - заметила змея.
|
"It is also lonely among men," the snake said.
|
Маленький принц внимательно посмотрел на нее.
|
The little prince gazed at him for a long time.
|
- Странное ты существо, - сказал он. - Не толще пальца...
|
"You are a funny animal," he said at last. "You are no thicker than a finger..."
|
- Но могущества у меня больше, чем в пальце короля, - возразила змея.
|
"But I am more powerful than the finger of a king," said the snake.
|
Маленький принц улыбнулся:
|
The little prince smiled.
|
- Ну, разве ты уж такая могущественная? У тебя даже лап нет. Ты и путешествовать не можешь...
|
"You are not very powerful. You haven't even any feet. You cannot even travel..."
|
- Я могу унести тебя дальше, чем любой корабль, - сказала змея.
|
"I can carry you farther than any ship could take you," said the snake.
|
И обвилась вокруг щиколотки Маленького принца, словно золотой браслет.
|
He twined himself around the little prince's ankle, like a golden bracelet.
|
- Всякого, кого я коснусь, я возвращаю земле, из которой он вышел, - сказала она.
|
"Whomever I touch, I send back to the earth from whence he came," the snake spoke again. "But you are innocent and true, and you come from a star..."
|
- Но ты чист и явился со звезды...
|
The little prince made no reply.
|
Маленький принц не ответил.
|
|
- Мне жаль тебя, - продолжала змея. - Ты так слаб на этой Земле, жесткой, как гранит. В тот день, когда ты горько пожалеешь о своей покинутой планете, я сумею тебе помочь. Я могу...
|
"You move me to pity—you are so weak on this Earth made of granite," the snake said. "I can help you, some day, if you grow too homesick for your own planet. I can—"
|
- Я прекрасно понял, - сказал Маленький принц. - Но почему ты все время говоришь загадками?
|
"Oh! I understand you very well," said the little prince. "But why do you always speak in riddles?"
|
- Я решаю все загадки, - сказала змея.
|
"I solve them all," said the snake.
|
И оба умолкли.
|
And they were both silent.
|
