According to the position of the tongue.
According to the position of lips.
According to their length.
According to the degree of tenseness.
Principle 1 According to the position of the tongue (according to the horizontal movement of the tongue). According to the horizontal movement of the tongue vowels are divided into the 5 groups: Front – переднего ряда Front – retracted – переднего, отодвинутого назад ряда Mixed – смешанного ряда Back – заднего рядаBack – advanced–заднего, продвинутого вперед ряда. Front vowels are those in the production of which the bulk of the tongue is in front part of the mouth [i:, e] Front – retracted are those in the production of which the bulk of the tongue is in front part of the mouth but somewhat retracted [ i] When both the middle and the back parts of the tongue are raised to the same height, forming the so –called “flat” or mixed positions the bulk of the tongue is placed in the centre of the mouth cavity. Vowels produced in this way are called central or mixed [ ᶺ,ә:, ә ] Back vowels are those in the production of which the bulk of the tongue is in the back part of the mouth: [ а:, о, о: u:] Back – advanced vowels are those in the production of which the bulk of the tongue is in the back part of the mouth but somewhat advanced: [ u ] b) According to the high of raised part of the tongue (according to the movement of the tongue) vowels are divided into three groups: Close or high - высокого подъема, Mid –open – среднего подъема, Open or low – низкого подъема. Close or high vowels [ i:, i, u, u: ]. Open or low vowels [ a:, o,o:,əe]. Mid – open or vowels of a medium position [ e,3:,ə,ᶺ ]
