REVIEW
For the diploma paper “Tagging problems of ‘Atoochtuktar’ (Verbal Adjectives) in the Newly
Created Kyrgyz Corpus and Means of their Translation into English”, written by graduate student
of Simultaneous Translation department, Faculty of Letters, Kyrgyzstan-Turkey "Manas"
University, Egemberdieva Alina.
The present research by Alina Egemberdieva is considered as one of the first studies performed in
the field of corpus linguistics as previously there has been any works of this character not only at
the Translation Department scale, but also at country level. Thus, I would like to note that this
study belongs to the list of fewest works that are devoted to the newest branch in the Kyrgyz
Linguistics, i.e. to corpus linguistics.
In her diploma paper, Alina Egemberdieva considers such grammatical category as “Atoochtuk”,
i.e. Verbal Adjectives, which is considered as a complex phenomenon, being defined as a special
form of verb in the Kyrgyz Grammar. Along with studying the peculiarities, theoretical
description, and the way how they are translated into English, Alina has also proposed her visions
regarding how verbal adjectives can or must be annotated in the corpus of the Kyrgyz Language
by providing multiple examples from different sources that are included in the newly-created
Kyrgyz corpus. She also provides discussions about how verbal adjectives are tagged and/or
annotated in other Turkic corpora, leaning on the works that have been published by scholars
expertizing on corpus linguistics of the Turkic languages. More precisely, the research shows that
the student parformed in-depth analysis regarding existing different tagsets and toolkits in order to
adapt Kyrgyz verbal adjectives. Consequently, Alina could find the most appropriate one, that is
the symbols of Turkic lexicon Apertium platform, which was recognized as such by us after long
discussions, taking into account the advantages of the symbols in the Apertium.
Along with all these, Alina has provided her paper with multiple statistical analyses, which
is also one of the advantages and novelties of this research because today one can not imagine any
research seriously without statistical and visual analyses. From this point of view, I consider this
work to be extremely uptodate and reasonable.

Another advantage of this paper is that the study is not limited within the scope of corpus
linguistics issues, but also comprises the issues how verbal adjectives are translated into English.
While doing this, Alina doesn’t only translate the examples in a literal way, but she also provides
translations made by other translators, i.e., leaning on published translations of the examples
considered in her research.
With all these in mind, it is worth noting that this study is one of the newest works in many
respects because the student’s ability to select, combine and use such different scientific theories
for the purpose to improve the scientific level of the research paper is really hard and this fact
should be taken into account as well.
As it has been described above, every chapter of the research is devoted to a special issue connected
with verbal adjectives. The diploma paper consists of an Introduction, three chapters, conclusion,
list of references, and glossary of the most frequently used terms used in the study. In addition,
each chapter contains clear deductions, summarizing the chapter considered.
The section of Introduction provides information on the topicality of the work, its goals, methods
used and reasons why this or that method has been selected for solving definite linguistic problem,
and the aim of the work along with the tasks that should be solved to reach the aim defined in the
study.
The first chapter discusses theoretical aspects of the research on corpus linguistics and includes
key concepts on this branch of Linguistics.
The second chapter is devoted to grammatical description of verbals and their morphology in the
Kyrgyz language. The chapter contains a large number of practical material and their analysis.
The third chapter suggests possible ways of how “Atoochtuk”, i.e. Verbal adjective can/must be
annotated on the basis of the definite examples. The suggested recommendations are very
interesting and deserve attention.
In the process of writing the thesis, the student has proved that she can manage with both
theoretical and practical materials and is knowledgeable in applying them to improve the scientific
performance of the work she performs, providing the work with clear and exact statistical data and
methods of visualization.

Consequently, Alina Egemberdieva has fully and accurately revealed the topic of the thesis. No
flaws were found. The work is written in scientific language. It is logical, sequential and clear. The
work performed is fully consistent and completed.
All parts of the thesis are written according to APA style including tables, graphs, and
figures. The work can be submitted for review, allowed to defend, and deserves the highest mark.
