8. Elementary English course guidelines:
SIS (Student Independent Study) consists of two assigned tasks to be done by students on the
independent basis. Before the start of the academic period every student is provided with a full
package of guidelines on the fulfillment of students’ independent study on paper containing:
- themes, the purpose and the content of tasks;
- recommended literature;
- reporting forms and schedule control;
- criteria for evaluation.
Fulfillment of students’ independent study is conducted in accordance with the academic calendar.
TSIS (Homework) consolidates the concepts and materials taken during in-class activities and
helps students to expand the content through diverse background resources and/or practise certain
skill areas; TSIS will develop the students’ ability to work in pairs and in small groups in exploring
and examining related issues. Types of Homework:
- Completion – anything not completed in class
- Practice – review and reinforcement of concepts presented in class
- Preparation – gathering and organization of materials for use in the classroom
- Extension – creative activities that integrate and/or expand upon classroom learning
Class sessions– the students are asked to consolidate their class work, to read, watch or listen to
materials in English, to prepare exercises and activities for the class, to write assignments, and
generally acquire a repertoire of effective language learning strategies.
In-class assessment (file tests / quick tests) is intended to check students’ understanding of the
material being taught.
Mid-term progress test – a test used to identify the students’ progress, their strengths and
weaknesses, intended to ascertain what further teaching is necessary.
It includes grammar,
vocabulary, reading, listening and writing sections (10 points).
End of term includes speaking - students discuss in pairs the topics studied during the course
(10 points)..
Final examination
–The final written test will include grammar, vocabulary, reading and
writing sections (40 points).

testing are awarded bonus points in the amount exceeded.
10. Formal paper submission policy: Academic honesty is expected of all students. Cheating
and plagiarism are violations of academic honesty. Any student found violating the academic
policy would receive an automatic “ZERO” for the assignment. All formal papers must be
submitted at the beginning of class on the day they are due. PAPERS THAT DO NOT MEET THE
DEADLINES ARE NOT ACCEPTED!!!
11. Attendance policy:
Attendance is mandatory. Students will be penalized for missing more than 10% of classes.
20% of classes missed without good reason will result in course failure.
Students must participate fully in every class. While attendance is crucial, merely being in
class does not constitute “participation”. Participation means reading the assigned materials,
coming to class prepared to ask questions and engage in discussion.
Students must arrive to class on time. Students are to take responsibility for making up any
work missed.
Students are responsible for obtaining all notes and assignments from the classes missed.
These arrangements are the student’s responsibility and a “Zero” will be given for
incomplete work. Make up tests in case of absence from classes will not normally be
allowed unless there is a valid reason for missing them.
Students are to enter the room before the teacher starts the lesson.
Mobile phones must always be “on a silent mode” in class.
Students should always show tolerance, consideration and mutual support towards other
students.
12. Academic Policy:
Students are expected to take an active role in learning (the instructor will provide the
information and guidelines to do this).
Students should follow the university academic policy regarding W, AW, I, F grades.
A student must earn not less than 25 points in the two attestation periods. If the sum of the
two attestation scores is less than 25 points, the student gets the unsatisfactory mark “Fail” (F) and
will not be admitted to the final examination. The final exam score must be not less than 20 points.
If the student earns less than 20 points the student gets the unsatisfactory “Fail” (F).
