12 "The word that came from behind thirty teeth reaches thirty clans". The rumour about Bayan's beauty that was beyond description arrived at ulus' outskirts. Four hundred Nogaily zhighits craving to witness Bayan's beauty gathered along the walls of the palace.
When the girl appeared before them, they all gasped with surprise and stood there with their mouths open! Bayan Sulu's glory reached glacial mountain peaks inaccessible for people and queer rocks resembling the bird samruk!1 Once her name was mentioned all the mountains shook, stones broke, lakes got rough, and winds raged.
On the square in front of the palace there thronged those who knew no rest because of the beauty of Bayan Sulu.
Sultangazy seated Karabay onto tor - an honorary place. Karakoz did not want to show her beautiful daughter, her white swan, to those people! Haughtily and captiously, as all women of Sary Arka usually do, she looked over dastarkhan1 spread on the carpet and, utterly displeased, said to her husband:

Old people followed Sultangazy-myrza, and Bayan was followed by all the youth. Among them Kodar, as mighty as a black mountain, was particularly distinguished. When the girl got into her gilded kuime-cart, Kodar pushed his shaggy head through.

17 And now it's time to recollect the past. Ninety murzas-masters served for the sake of the belle, straining themselves to the breaking point, ready to tear their hearts out of their bodies for her attention only. And among them there was that very slave Aibas, whom Sarybay gave to Karabay long time ago as a symbol of their friendship. Diligent in work and loyal to his vow, Aibas was indignant inside, seeing what was happening, and he often remembered the distant Sary Arka and the orphan Kozy. When he saw Karabay and Kodar, he kept on smiling to them, but he planned to run away and to deliver a message from Kozy to Bayan at any price.
Years passed slowly, months ran like fast racers, weeks followed weeks in arshine steps, and instantly like a flash days flew.
Kodar, riding a skewbald horse, shepherded Karabay's horses as his own, here climbing the steep slopes, there descending to steppe expanses. One day a black mare that had never foaled before delivered a foal just at the time when the morning star Sholpan died out and the pale sunrise was breaking, and when the first light glowed at the east. Ninety horse-herds marveled at this miracle and, in order not to put the evil eye on the foal, called him Bakaaigyr, which meant the Frog-Stallion. Keeping an eye on him night and day, the slave Aibas noticed that the foal possessed peculiar features: within three days he already became as big as his mother mare, grew up quickly, and, like a mature stallion.

19 But are Bayan Sulu and Kozy Korpesh to blame? Aibas reflected on that night and day, disturbed by those events. At last he decided to share his secret with Bayan and waited for a convenient moment to do it.
Bayan missed her beloved and pleaded God to bring them together. When Aibas told her about his decision, she wept and wrote a letter to Kozy, where she revealed to him her covert girl's secrets.
"The high mountains, the rough sea, the blooming steppe, the noisy forest, listen to me! The elders who led their hard lives and old women wearing kerchiefs, you listen to me too! Karabay brought me here by force not listening to his people's persuasions. Livestock is dearer to him than his daughter! He did not pay any attention to the voice of my heart; I am in despair and I don't know what to do. I am yours, Kozy, come and rescue me from this hell, your fiancee is helpless and she cannot come to you!"

20 Aibas aga, it's you! - Kozy rushed to him, embraced him, lifted up and began spinning with him. — Aibas aga, is everything all right in the place where you have been? What good news can you tell me? — he asked him.
Aibas was surprised that Kozy recognized him, but he kept silence as if he were dumb. Then he flung himself upon Bakaaigyr and rode away, following his nose. The boy got angry with the servant's behaviour. "If he grew dumb he could at least give a nod or let me know by gestures that he heard what I had said. What does it mean? If he made off, then let him never come here again!» - he was downright angry with Aibas.
Aibas felt like a fly between two millstones and it was driving him crazy. The farthest road may turn out to be closer than the closest. If you go north - your vehicle will break down, if you go south - your bull will die!
His plan was to bring a message from Bayan. He overcame the pursuit of Kodar and his gang, spent many months traveling, was exhausted, reached his goal through many difficulties - and here we go, baibishe Mamabike ordered him to keep silence and not to disturb her only son! Should he lose time, and Kodar would take Bayan by force or by ruse, and then irrevocable misfortune could happen. . Karabay, who sold his soul for livestock, would be on Kodar's side. Would Bayan and Kozy forgive him if they did not meet because of him? "While I can breathe I would find Bayan, why didn't you bring me her message?" — Kozy would accuse him. And what if Bayan should think she would better jump from a rock and die than marry Kodar.

21 The old woman's revelation made Kozy be engrossed in thoughts. He
was dazed and could not find any peace. Different rumours reached him,
became obvious, and Kozy made up his mind to begin taking action. He
felt being a mature zhighit. Kozy put his bow on his shoulder and ran home
almost in tears. The love melancholy went deep into his heart. "When do I
see my Bayan?" — he thought. Torturing himself like this, he wept through
three days and three nights, and three days and three nights he ate and
drank nothing at all. But a human being is a living thing. After this he came
to his mother and asked her to prepare some food for him. The poor mother waited just for this. But the fact that Kozy learnt about his fiancee Bayan, became a misery for Mamabike. Together with her son she did not sleep and did not eat for three days and three nights, trying to make up how she
should do away with that. She had no one to ask advice from, for she was afraid that Kozy would find out about it and get hurt. Finally she decided to keep mum and not to say the truth about Bayan even if her son would inquire about her.

And the blizzard of extreme force burst out. Karabay fearing for his flock called for his daughter.

They recalled days that passed, as they lay together in the cradle, then began to grabble. As their mothers were glad, as they learnt how to walk like saiga's babies, as they heard about each other for the first time. Kozy, my darling, we do the wrong and unworthy thing, and if we
don't get engaged, nothing can excuse our sin both before God and people.
Let my father and mother know that my fiance arrived, let them be glad,
arrange the feast, invite guests and celebrate the wedding according to the

38 Days were passing by. Kodar, Kozy and Aibas went on shepherding Ka-rabay's horses. Once a week Kozy visited Bayan in her aul.
Even in winter livestock grazed at pastures, and that fact pleased Karabay very much. As for himself, he enjoyed feasts and had fun. But time is dynamic. The winter passed by, the spring came, filling ravines and gullies with water from melted snow, turning the wide steppe into the huge garden of flowers and giving every heart the joy of serene warmth.
Kodar, missing Bayan all through winter, at last drove herds of horses to aul. Kozy and Aibas came along with him too. Kodar, being the head of horse-herds, started to prepare in the outskirts of aul zheli — a tether for milky mares, for Bayan to enjoy her favourite drink — koumiss.

— Hey, bloody Tazsha, you won me! You think if you pulled me out
of the saddle then the game is over? Damn this game! — blushing up to his
ears, Kodar muttered.
This defeat insulted him deeply and in his heart he decided to revenge. "I'll settle scores with you some day!" — he said to himself.

42 And that is what happened there in fact. Kodar, hating Kozy, night and day traced his enemy. He did realize that Bayan had no feelings towards him. He also knew that while Kozy was alive, the girl would never marry him. Thus there was only one thing left to do: to send her fiance to kingdom come! When all the Nogailenes went to the funeral repast, Kodar stayed there. He saw once that Kozy lay down to have some rest and, stepping lightly like a cat, he came closer to him. Kozy, who had watched over the herd all night long, slept soundly. "Nobody will look for him!" — thought Kodar, took his bow and a tipped arrow and pulled the bow-string. He shot with all his might, aiming just at his heart. Kozy did not even let out a cry. They say that sleep is a human's enemy; it will never warn him and will never say that the danger is coming over. The treacherous enemy sneaked up to him imperceptibly. Eh, life is short like a handle of kamcha, no one can make it longer!
Making sure that Kozy was dead, the stony-hearted Kodar cut his head off in order to show it to Bayan. He wanted to tie up Kozy's sorrel horse, but he felt that something was wrong and shied away, scared.

43 Showing off, Kodar entered aul, as though he won Kozy in the fair single combat. He threw Kozy's head down to Bayan's feet, saying: "Here is the head of your husband!"
The night seemed to cover aul with darkness. Everything around was filled with mourning and grief. Bayan wrapped Kozy's head into the piece of cloth and hid it into the chest. In tears she rushed to look for Karabay. He saw his daughter and put on airs.
-Father, who is the one that killed your son-in-law, tell me?! - she
demanded the answer from Karabay. He could hardly conceal his joy: he finally won; Sarybay's son who came to take his daughter away was killed! He embraced Bayan, shed false tears and tried to console his daughter, as though trying to fulfill his debt of the father by this. Bayan fainted now and then, came to her senses, and spent three days and three nights in torments, lamenting the dead with bitter weeping — zhoktau. This life is so short! I'll follow my beloved too! — some believed that her words were true, some did not.

44 -A Nogaily Kodar killed Kozy! - Karabay said. - The batyr of this land, the head of my horse-herds, the self-assured zhighit with the soul of a child. We'll see many of your zhighits, so you pick out the worthiest of them, marry him, I'll arrange the wedding! — her father said.

45 Oh life! What can be harder than to lose the jewellery that you already had in your hands? Sobbing and whining, Bayan decided to find her lover's body. Aul citizens, who did not support her in the hour of need, Bayan cursed: "Let the earth burn under your feet!" Complaining of her destiny, the girl spent at the deserted hearth three days and three nights. Nogailenes had never heard such a whining. "Kodar, stop this whining!" — ordered aksakals. Kodar, who began to realize his guilt, waited just for this. On the back of his skewbald stallion he approached Bayan and blurted out words that he prepared beforehand:
— Numerous slaves water horses. My heart is filled with joy when I see
you. Your Kozy is dead, who else will take you now but me?

46 Bayan, hatred filling her heart, crying bitter tears, mad because of her misery, raised her head to Kodar. Seeing the self-assured Kodar bending over her, Bayan had a burning desire to revenge him for Kozy's death, but she controlled her anger and said:
I will be yours, Kodar, just show me the place where Kozy's body lies!
You seem to disbelieve me. If you agree to become my wife, then say it now outright. I'll show you your bald Tazsha, — said Kodar proudly.
They saddled their horses and rode up to Shokterek.

47 Hey, Kodar, I am so thirsty. I won't cry any more. Here is my golden
shoe for you. Let's go to that well, you'll get some water for me. As I slake
my thirst, we'll play a girl's game, — said Bayan, her face gleaming.
So they came up to the deep well at the foot of Shokterek. Kodar was beside himself with joy and seemed to reach the sky with his head.

49 Kodar went down to the bottom of the well forty meters deep and passed water in the shoe to his beloved twice.
If your thirst is slaked, pull me out of here, Bayan. This well is icy
cold inside, I am cold, — said Kodar gently.
In reply the expression of the girl's face suddenly changed and, sternly looking down, she said:
-Die now, Kodar! Let your body lie at the bottom of this well, eaten by frogs! — saying this, she took out a knife, ready to cut her tress off.
There is a bridle for any obstinate man, Kodar. Goodbye, batyr of the Nogai land. You are the victim of one of forty girl's tricks. You dirtily killed Kozy in his sleep, and you boasted of it. Let your hands remain bloody even in the world beyond!

50 That very instant the infuriated Bayan cut off her tress, which Kodar was gripping at. He fell onto the bottom of the well forty meters deep. Having done with Kodar, Bayan returned to Shokterek. Sorrow filled her heart now, and the beauty of her face was distorted. No one would recognize the former beautiful girl in her. Exhausted because of her grief and tears, she walked with difficulty and, seeing the unburied body of Kozy, shed tears again.
A caravan passing by Shokterek stopped at its foot, just where a lonely broken-hearted woman sat.
-Why are you sitting here in tears? - caravan men asked her.Bayan raised her head, saw men surrounding her and said:
- Oh, such a bitter lot do I have! We were the children of Karabay
and Sarybay. And only a few months we were together. And today the hour
of death has come. I am crushed by my grief, what else can I say to you?
Caravan people admired Bayan's beauty. They took counsel with one another and then addressed to her with the following words:
- Bayan Sulu, a young girl like you should not stay all alone. Tell us who of us you would like to marry? — they asked her. And they gave her a few days to think it over.

51 When time given to her to think was over, she came up to the foot of Shokterek and announced her decision.
— The dead zhighit was my beloved. There is nobody in this world to
whom I can compare him. Now my only wish is to build a mazar-mausoleum over the remnants of my lover, for his grave not to remain in the steppe a lonely unnoticeable hill. I shall agree to marry a man who will build such a mazar! - she said. Caravan people started to work as soon as they heard it. They picked up stones, puddled clay, added horse hairs into it and built a high mazar. Bayan was satisfied with what they constructed. Deep in thought, she paced to and fro, then bent over Kozy's remnants and touched them with her hands for the last time, saying: "Rest in peace!"
She stood there thinking for some time more, then came up to caravan people who were waiting for her some distance away from her. Everyone of them hoped that it was just him who would take Bayan. We kept our promise, now let her say whom of us she has chosen.
The beautiful Bayan, plunged in heavy thoughts, began to speak about her decision.
- Oh people of the big caravan! I appreciate that you have constructed this mazar. But I can't marry all of you, that is why I shall choose the one who will be the strongest and smartest out of all the rest!
These words turned into disaster for the caravan men. In their efforts to become owners of the beautiful Bayan, they began to kill one another in single combats. Only three men were left out of forty. Each of them found his shelter in three Kazakh zhuzes. Poets-akyns of these zhuzes composed songs about Kozy and Bayan. These songs spread quickly all over Kazakh steppe, and the mazar was inherited by descendants as a memory of pure and faithful love.
