Participle I Perfect Active and Passive denotes an action prior

Participle II has no tense distinctions; it has only one form which 

can express both an action simultaneous with, and prior to, the action 

expressed by the finite verb; the latter case is more frequent.

Translation:

a) Participle I may correspond to the Russian причастие действи-

тельного залога (ending in -

щий

: читающий, спешащий, 

читавший, спешивший) and деепричастие несовершенного вида 

(ending in -

а

: читая, спеша). 

b) Participle II is translated by the Russian причастие страдатель-

ного залога совершенного и несовершенного вида ending in -нный, 

-емый, -имый, -тый, also by причастие, образованное от возврат-

ных глаголов: 

invented

 – изобретенный, изобретаемый, изобретав-

шийся, 

built

 – построенный, 

 – напечатанный, etc.

c) Participles formed from the verbs with prepositions require a 

particular attention in translation into Russian.

The issues

 in the report are of great importance.

 в докладе вопросы имеют большое значение.

The lecture 

followed by

 discussion was a great success.
