Forms of the Gerund

	Active	Passive
Indefinite (Simple)	doing	being doing
Perfect	having done	having been done

Simple Gerund используется для действия, которое происходит одновременно с действием глагола-сказуемого:

She likes visiting her friends. - Она любит ходить в гости к своим друзьям.
She likes being visited by her friends. - Она любит, когда ее посещают друзья.

Perfect Gerund используется для действия, которое предшествует действию глагола-сказуемого:

He is excited of having spoken to her. - Он взволнован от того, что поговорил с ней.
He is excited of having been spoken to. - Он взволнован, что с ним поговорили.

The Gerund in the role definition (определение)	Verb + Object + Preposition + Gerund	We have no intention of ordering sandwiches with pork.	Мы не собираемся заказывать сэндвичи со свининой. (have - глагол, intention - дополнение, of - предлог, ordering - герундий).
The Gerund in the role of adverbial modifier (обстоятельство)	Verb + (Object) + Preposition + Gerund	Upon putting the pieces on the chess-board my friend made the first move. One day, on returning to his hotel, he found a note in his room. (time) So you see I couldn’t sleep for worrying. (reason) She dressed without making a sound. (manner - образа действия) But for meeting John, I shouldn’t have become an English teacher. (condition)	После размещения фигур на шахматной доске, мой друг сделал первый шаг. Table of verbs after which only the Gerund is used

I. Переведите предложения, определив функции инфинитива:

The engineer insists on those devices being a new step in the development of technique.
Nothing can be done but wait for its being eliminated.
The constructor informed us of establishing a new record of a nonstop flight.
It is normal practice to separate control and relay protection by providing a relay-protection room close to the switchgear.

II. Замените формы причастия в функции обстоятельства соответствующими формами герундия с предлогами in или on:
