EFFICIENT CATALYSTS IN THE PETROCHEMICAL PROCESS ACCORDING 
TO THE REQUIREMENTS OF "GREEN CHEMISTRY"

Oil is one of the most important mineral resources. However, oil refining is harmful to the 
environment. Currently, the task of finding new effective catalysts for petrochemical and organic 
synthesis processes that meet the requirements of "green chemistry" is an urgent task in 
Kazakhstan. To solve this problem, the Kazakh doctor of science Khadichakhan Rafikova created a 
new type of rhodium-iridium catalysts used in oil refining processes. 
The creation of rhodium-iridium catalysts based on phosphorus-containing ionic liquids is a 
completely new direction in the scientific field of Kazakhstan. An ionic liquid is a special class of 
salts, consisting only of ions and having a melting point below 100°C. They are mainly used in 
applied sciences, biotechnology, energy and petrochemistry. Ionic liquids are called green solvents. 
The relevance of this topic lies in the use of rhodium-iridium catalysts in processes important for 
industry and petrochemical synthesis, such as the hydrogenation of acetophenone, the co-production 
of styrene and propylene oxide from ethylbenzene and propylene, the production of stilbenes 
necessary for semi-rigid plastic production by copolymerization with more active monomers.
The fundamental difference is that generally harmful acids are used as solvents in the process 
of oil refining. These standard solvents are very harmful to the atmosphere, being one of the reasons 
for the formation of ozone holes, which leads to global warming. Whereas rhodium-iridium 
catalysts allow the process to be carried out without these solvents, on the basis of water - the purest 
and most environmentally friendly reagent.
