Interpersonal skills
- the ability to interact successfully with others - are at
the core of effective group work and speaking, as the main medium of communication in a group, is
the most critical of these skills. Students, particularly shy ones, need to have a positive and safe
environment for speaking, so you need to ensure that all students understand and apply the
principles of inclusion and respect for others’ views. If a shy student feels they can express an
opinion without having it shot down, they will feel less daunted when taking part in group
activities.
Members can feel a sense of loss of identity as they become anonymous in the group. Co-
members do not recognize them for who they are, but in terms of what they expect from them.
