Botanical and morphological characteristics.
Botanical variety:
var. minantica
Gust. Stalk ribs are violet-colored. Glumes are awnless, by the end of ripening stage
they become brown-yellow, what helps to distinguish Viola from other rice varieties.
The shrub is dense; plants are erect with firm stem. Plant height is 80–85 cm.
Panicle is dense, slightly drooping, 14–16 cm long, containing about 125 spikelets.
Panicle sterility is 6–8 %. Leaves are deep-green.
Grain and milled rice quality, cooking properties.
Grain is roundish, length
to breadth ratio (
l/b
) is 1.6–1.7. 1000 grain weight is 28–29 g. Milled rice is white,
non-translucent. Total milled rice is 66–68 %. While cooking, milled rice forms a gluish
porridge, which tastes non-typically for rice. So Viola grain is good for meal production
and further production of diet and therapeutic food.
Tolerance to environmental stress factors.
The variety has high blast tolerance,
and medium tolerance to rice leaf nematode. It is also tolerant to lodging and shattering.
Yield capacity.
Yield potential is 6.0–7.0 t/ha.
