Theme 3 : First Impressions Different characteristics about the British character
Aims: 1. Enlarge vocabulary on theme: “Character”
2.. Read the text and discuss it.
For centuries the British have been known as snobbish, aloof, hypocritical and unsociable.
These characteristics have been noted by people from all over the world. Are they typical for all Britons? The ordinary Briton was seen to be friendly and sociable. There are indeed two nations, with basically different outlooks and characters, in Britain. The two nations are defined simply as the rich and the poor.
Englishmen tend to be rather conservative, they love familiar things. They are hostile, or at least bored, when they hear any suggestion that some modification of their habits, or the introduction of something new and unknown into their lives, might be to their advantage.
The English are practical and realistic, prudent and careful about almost everything. Everything is orderly. The lawns and the trees are neatly trimmed. Drinks are carefully measured, seats in a cinema are carefully designed, closing hours rigorously observed.
The British people are considered to be the world’s greats tea drinkers. They drink it at meals and between meals.
Every Englishman is said to be a countryman at heart. The English countryside is many things to many people. It stands for freshness, for leisure, fun and games.
The English are reputed to have a good sense of humor. "He is a man of humor" or "He has no sense of humor" is often heard in Britain, where humor is so highly prized.
With Scotland some people associate people, who are heavy drinkers and smokers. It’s not true. The Scots are said to be a serious people, rather inventive and somewhat mystical.
The Irish are known for their charm as well as for the beauty of the Irish girls.
The Welsh are emotional people but sometimes reticent.

Theme 4: What types of film do you like?
Aims: 1. Enlarge vocabulary on theme: ”Weekend”.
Week end
Most people in our country work five days a week from Monday to Friday. Colleges and universities are closed on Saturdays and Sundays. So from Friday evening till Monday morning people are usually free. As a schoolgirl I always envy those students who go to school five but not six days a week, as I do. Schoolchildren have the only day off. It is Sunday.
Students or young people who work away from home and people who are not married like to go away for the weekend. They may go home to stay with their relatives or friends in different parts of the country. Those who stay at home at the weekend try to have a good time too and to do some work about the house.
On Friday night, many people like to relax after work. They go out for dinner, to the movies, concerts, or plays. Other people just like to stay at home and watch TV.
On Saturday morning, supermarkets and shopping malls are crowded with people buying food, clothing, presents and other things they need. Saturday morning is a very busy time for shopping as this is the only day when people who are at work on weekend days can go shopping all day long.
On Saturday afternoon the most important sports events take place football, tennis and others. Some men go and watch others sit and watch the sports programmes on TV.
Saturday evening is the favorite time for patries, dances, going to the cinema or the theatre, in fact for going out. It’s the time to relax, have fun, and do things around the house.
On Sunday mornings, many people like to sleep late, especially people who stayed up late on Saturday night. They read the newspaper, and often eat a late breakfast. Many families have a big dinner on Sunday afternoons. Grandparents and other relatives often come to visit. On Sunday evenings, people usually stay at home and prepare for the week ahead.
Tasks and questions:
II. Translate the following groups of words:
to look forward to, to go away for the weekend, to have a nice weekend, to do some work about the house, to relax after work, to stay at home, to be crowded, to have a good time, sports events, favorite time, in fact for going out, to prepare for the week ahead.
III. Fill in the blanks with suitable preposition:
1. Most people in our country work five days a week ... Monday ... Friday. 2. ... Friday nights, many people like to relax after work 3. Saturday morning is a very busy time ... shopping. 4. Saturday evening is the favorite time ... parties, dances.. 5. ... Sunday evenings, people usually stay ... home and prepare ... the week ahead.

Aims: Enlarge vocabulary on theme: “Hobby”
Do you collect matchbox tops or stamps, stones, flowers or shells?
Are you interesting in dancing? Everyone likes dancing of some sort. Perhaps you are fond of ballet, classical or modern. Or perhaps you like country and folk dancing. Or perhaps you just like moving to the rhythm of popular records.
Do you like sightseeing in towns where there are old buildings: palaces, castles, churches and old houses of historical interest?
The author of an article in a Polish paper has counted 1019 personal interests and ways to spend one’s free time. The most popular hobbies are philately, collecting view-cards, coins and books. Some people are interested in modern architecture. They collect pictures showing the most interesting architectural designs of our time.
Others are interested in photography. They like taking photos of historical buildings and ancient culture; they always take their cameras with them when they are on holiday. They keep a photographic record of family events.
It is impossible to describe all these 1019 hobbies known in the world. The main thing is that they increase your knowledge in some particular field and broaden your outlook.
Almost every Englishman with any spare time has a hobby, and it is almost impossible to guess from his profession or appearance his personal interests.
