Energy exchange consists of three stages. The first is preparation, the
second is without oxygen, and the third is with oxygen.
The preparatory stage of energy exchange takes place in the cytoplasm
(lysosomes) of cells in the human digestive system. At this stage,
complex organic compounds are broken down into simple compounds
under the influence of digestive enzymes.During this period, a small
amount of released energy is distributed to the environment in the
form of heat.
The oxygen-free (anaerobic) stage of energy exchange takes place in
the cytoplasm of cells. Oxygen does not participate in the further
decomposition of insoluble organic compounds formed during the
preparation stage. This stage of energy exchange is sometimes called
the opening stage.
The oxygen stage of energy exchange (Greek aer- "air") takes place in
the mitochondria of cells. In the presence of enzymes and oxygen, a
chain of very complex chemical reactions takes place, and a large
amount of energy is released. For example, 27 kcal of energy is
released when sugar molecules break down in the anoxic period of
energy exchange, and 674 kcal in the oxygenated period. Therefore,
the oxygen phase of energy exchange is very beneficial for the body.
