2.1.4 Transitive and Intransitive Verbs (Өтмө жана өтпөс этиштер) In Kyrgyz as well as in English, a verb can be described as
transitive or
intransitive based on
whether it requires an object to express a complete thought or not.
A transitive verb requires a direct object (тике толуктооч). The action of the verb is directed
toward the direct object: the verb passes its action onto the object; the object receives the action
of the verb. The direct object completes the meaning of the transitive verb; without the direct
object the meaning and the action of the verb are not fully understandable. The object of the
action being a direct complement answers the questions of accusative case
whom? what? (табыш жөндөмөсү кимди? эмнени?) E.g.:
He is reading a newspaper. Ал гезит окуп жатат. [al gezıt okup jatat]
An intransitive verb cannot take a direct object. An intransitive verb does not need a direct object
to complete the meaning of the verb. It denotes a state or action that relates to an actor and can
be followed by all other cases. E.g.:
Досум концерттен кайтты. [dosum konsertten kaytty]
My friend has returned from the concert.
