Articles

Артикльдер тек зат есімнің алдында қолданылады.

Ағылшын тілінде артикльдердің екі түрі бар; a/an- indefinite (белгісіздік) және the- definite (белгілік).


(a/an) Indefinite articles

a/an- indefinite (белгісіздік) артикльдері санауға болатын, тек жекеше түрде тұрған зат есім алдында қолданылады.

an артиклі дауысты дыбыстан басталатын зат есім алдында (a, e, i, o, u) қолданылады.

a артиклі дауыссыз дыбыстан басталатын зат есім алдында қолданылады.

Definite article the артикілінің қолдануы

the- definite (белгілік) артикілі жекеше, көпше түрдегі зат есімдердің және саналмайтын зат есімдердің алдында да қолданыла береді.

Қолданылуы:

1. белгілі бір зат есім алдында;

2. дүниеде біреу ғана бар зат есім алдында : the sun, the Earth, so on.

3. өзен, көл, теңіз, тау аттарының алдында;

4. театр, кино, мұражай, қонақ үй, газет-журналдардың аттарының алдында;

5. реттік сан есімдермен.

Zero article. Ешқандай артикль қолданбауы

1. have + meals; have + тағам; have dinner and so on.

2. саналмайтын зат есімдермен;

Exercise 1. Use articles: a, an :

Event, friend, table, apple, door, eye, ear, desk, pen, teacher, engineer, school, film, station, airport, English book, blackboard, computer, ice-cream, flower, armchair,

chair, hero, piano, leaf, glass, horse, word, instrument, cow, ship, tree, schoolgirl.

Exercise 2. Use articles where necessary:

Star, London, umbrella, Volga, Browns, king, Abai Square, inkpot, Alatau, airplane, train, Smith, north, son, sun, south, Irtysh, Almaty, station, earth, Pacific Ocean, Europe, Asia, USA, girl, west, moon, Thames, Black Sea, office, east, gold, ink.

The Perfect Tenses (аяқталған шақтар)

The Present Perfect to have көмекші етістігінің осы шағы және етістіктің үшінші формасы арқылы жасалады. (I have worked, He has worked).

Қысқартылған формасы: I’ve, he’s, she’s they’ve, you’ve

The Present Perfect шағымен мынандай мезгіл пысықтауыштары қолданылады:

just, already, never, ever, yet, lately, recently, today, this week (month, year).

Remember! To have + Participle II (Past Participle)

Exercise 1. Write each of the following sentences first in the negative and then in the interrogative form:

1. They have done something. 2. He has given them some money. 3. You have brought something for us. 4. I have taken some English books from you.5. She has read it to her. 6. He has written it to somebody. 7. We have read this book recently.



Exercise 2. Change the verbs in the following sentences into the present perfect:

1. I am eating my breakfast. 2. We are drinking water. 3. He is bringing them some meat and vegetables. 4. You are putting the dishes on the table. 5. They are having tea. 6. She is taking the dirty plates from the table. 7. We are playing chess now.



Exercise 3. Put the verb in brackets into the present perfect:

1. I don’t know this girl, I never (meet) her before. 2. “Where is Mother?”- “She just (go) out. 3. Don’t worry about the letter. I already (post) it. 4.” Do you speak Spanish?”- “No, I never (study) it. 5. He (see/not) his friends since last September. 6. I (not/speak) to her yet.



Exercise 4. Put the questions to all the parts of the sentence:

1. He has told us a good fortune. 2. I have put his things in the room next to yours. 3. The children just have played in the yard. 4. She has lived in Almaty for five years.5. The trees have thrown off their yellow leaves. 6. I have finished my perort today.



Exercise 5. Complete with the correct word:

for, since, yet, already, just.

1. I wrote to him three weeks ago but he hasn’t answered my letter ….

Exercise 6. Think of the questions for which the following might be answers:

The Infinitive Use:

- to + Infinitive:

1. to answer the question “why”

2. after adjectives

3 after such verbs: would like, want, need, decide, hope, expect, plan, forget, seem, try, promise, offer, refuse, learn and manage.



- Infinitive (without to)

1. after such verbs: make, let, see, hear, feel, watch, notice and help.(American English).

2. after some expressions ( would rather, had better).

3. after modal verbs



Exercise 1. Use gerund with a suitable preposition:

1. I have no intention ...(to stay) here any longer. 2. She insisted ... (to help) me. 3. Are you fond ... (to play) tennis? 4. He has had very much experience ... (to teach). 5. Exercise 2. Translate these sentences into your native language:

1. They accuse him of having robbed the house. 2. He never agreed to their going on that dangerous voyage. 3. He did not approve of her drinking so much coffee. 4.All the happiness of my life depends on your loving me. 5. I don’t feel seeing him. 6. I insist on being told the truth. 7. The baby looked like crying. 8. I object to his borrowing money from you. 9. My friend suceeded in translating this difficult text. 10. He gave up the idea of ever hearing from her. 11. The Gerund (герундий) (verb+ ing).

Use:


1. after prepositions

2. after these verbs: to like, to love. to hate, don’t like, to enjoy,to mind, to finish, to stop,to excuse, to fancy, to postpone, to feel like, to deny, to look like, to avoid.

3. after verbs with prepositions:

a). accuse of, approve of, complaion of, suspect of, be accused of, be afraid of, be fond of, be proud of.

b) agree to, look forward to, object to, in addition to, be devoted to, be used to, be commited to.

c) depend on, insist on, rely on, go on, count on.

d) persist in, suceed in, consist in, result in, spend in, be engaged in, believe in, be interested in, participate in.

e) thank for, apologize for, forgive for, have an excuse for, thank for.

f) prevent from,

g) put off,

h) give up the idea of, think about/of, dream about/of, talk about/of, complain about/of, be excited about, be worried about.

4. as a subject in the sentence.

The Passive voice

(ырықсыз етіс)

Passive voice to be көмекші етістігі және етістіктердің 3 формасы ( past participle) арқылы жасалады. Іс-әрекет иесі туралы айту қажеттілігі болмауы, негізі қимыл, іс-әрекет туралы айтылуы керек жағдайда қолданылады.

e. g. The film was made in 1997 (we are not interested in the people who made it).

Егерде іс-әрекет иесі туралы айту қажеттігі туса, онда by демеулігі арқылы беріледі. e. g. The film was made in 1997 by James Cameron.
The Present Indefinite Passive – is (am,are) done

The Past Indefinite Passive – was (were) done

The Future Indefinite Passive – will (shall) be done

The Present Perfect Passive – have ( has) been done

The Past Perfect Passive - had been done

The Future Perfect Passive - will (shall) have been done

Exercise 3. Use the verbs in brackets in the correct tense form (active or passive):

Exercise 4. Express the following sentences in the passive. Do not mention the subjects of the active verbs. The first sentence has been done for you.

Exercise 1. Use the correct tense form of the verbs in the subordinate clauses of time and condition:

Presentation of own family

My name is Amina. I am in my last year at school. My family is not large, my mother, my father, my little brother and I.

My brother takes after my mum, but people say I take after my dad.

My father is an economist and he’s got his own business. He is a well-built, handsome man. His hair is curly and short. His eyes are hazel. He is a very serious man. He is always very busy. He’s nice and friendly.

My mother is younger than my father. She works as a financier and she’s quite attractive. She’s got dark hair and a nice face with dark brown eyes. She is a very kind woman. She works five days a week and is off on Saturdays and Sundays. She is a wonderful housewife. She does everything about the house: she cooks, goes shopping, cleans the rooms.

My brother Daulet is funny and a bit different. He is not very interested in fashion. He likes his jeans and old clothes. He is a slim and long-legged boy. He is sociable and reserved. Daulet is fond of computer games and rock music. He goes to school.

At weekends we go to the country house where my grandparents live. They like to work in the kitchen garden. They are full of energy and my grandfather says work keeps them healthy and young. My grandfather grows different vegetables. My grandmother is fond of flowers, and we always bring home a lot of beautiful flowers.

I have an uncle and an aunt. I have two cousins, my uncle’s daughter and a son, who is my age. We are good friends and sometimes spend our free time together.

I love my parents and my relatives and they love me. We are a happy family.

Theme 2: Daily routine Free time

Aims: 1. Describing your working day and weekend

2. Read the text and discuss: What is your favourite time of the day? Why?



The daily routine

On week days the alarm-clock wakes me up and my working day begins. I usually get up at seven o’clock. I jump out of bed, go to the window and open it to let the fresh morning air in. Sometimes I am not so quick to leave my bed, and I bury my head under the pillows pretending not to hear the alarm-clock. But all the same, it is time to get up and I start getting ready for my working day.

I make my bed and go to the bathroom where I clean my teeth, have a shower. Then I go to my room and dress for school. By that time my mother has cooked breakfast and I eat it. While I am having breakfast, I listen to the radio. Breakfast, as my parents say, must be the most substantial meal of the day. But usually neither my mother nor I have any time to cook it, so I just have a cup of tea or coffee and some sandwiches. I leave my house at twenty minutes to eight. It doesn’t take me long to get to school. I arrive to school at five minutes to eight. On my way to school I often meet my classmates and we go to school together.

Our lessons start at eight. We usually have five or six eight lessons a day. It is not easy to study at our school, but it is reputed to be the best in our region. I never go home right after school. Three times a week I train in the gym and on Wednesday we have an optional class in English, which I never miss. I have a lot of work to do at home every day. It usually takes me about three hours to get ready for the next working day. Sometimes in the evening my friends come to my place and we talk or play; sometimes we go for a walk, but not very often. I go to my room and read a little before I go to sleep.

Text 2 I. Read and discuss about how you spend your free time.

My free time

There’s plenty to do after school hours, particularly sport which I enjoy most. My favourite sport is football. Almost all my friends are here. We train hard and we play for the school and in various regional youth tournaments.

After school I usually spend my free time at home helping my mother about the house or doing domestic chores.

In winter I enjoy skiing or skating. If the weather is nasty it’s good to stay at home and watch TV or read books, newspapers or play the computer games. I spend a considerable time playing computer games.

In summer I am fond of swimming, lying in the sun, walking in the park or in the forest. I enjoy fresh air walking in the forest.

In spring it’s pleasant to be out of doors. I think, it’s common with most young people to spend some time outdoors. Street life is important for us. We meet somewhere in streets and talk and then go to town centre to do window shopping and ‘see what’s going on’. We enjoy disco-dancing on week-ends. The most of young people like going to the theatre or to a cinema.

Some of my friends use some of their free time to earn money by working in different places. Some of them wash cars for people; others do a part-time job for shops and cafes. As for me I earn my pocket money washing cars in the evenings.

I’ve usually got enough to do the things I want. I can buy books or the records I want without asking the permission from my parents.
