2.2 British traditions and customs associated with birth and upbringing of the child

Preparation for the appearance of a baby in the family in England begins as soon as it becomes known about the pregnancy. Midwives immediately supply the young family with a pile of brochures, brochures and books, from which you can learn about almost everything, from toxicosis to the schedule of classes for pregnant women and discounts in children's clothing stores. Shopping is an important part of the process of waiting for the birth of a child. The expectant mother goes shopping, then with her parents, then with her friends, then with the baby's dad. Each such trip is almost a ritual: discussion, selection, purchase and discussion again somewhere in a cafe. Fathers take an active part in everything. Usually couples go to doctors and courses together. Recently, the tradition of arranging a "Baby Shower Party" for a young mother, which came from the USA, has been popular. Usually it's a surprise for a young mother. It is arranged by friends and relatives. Everyone gives gifts to the unborn child: clothes, toys. After giving birth, relatives and friends visit mom and baby right in the ward. One of the traditions is to bring balloons with the inscription "Baby Girl" or "Baby Boy" to the hospital. Even 20 years ago, home births were very common in Britain. However, some mothers still prefer to give birth at home. In the old days, there were many traditions associated with the birth of a child. For example, for a woman in labor, a "soup" was cooked from horse hooves, fish eyes and cat excrement. It was believed that if a woman inhaled his scent during pregnancy, he would communicate to the uterus and the birth would be faster and easier. There was a tradition in Scotland to give a newborn a coin. If he threw it, it was believed that he would become a spender, and if, on the contrary, he squeezed it in his pen, then he would be a miser. Even today, many Scots, looking into a stroller with a child, put a coin there.
The custom, which has survived to this day, is associated with the famous British wedding cake. When you listen to stories about this miracle of cooking, you get the impression that it has the ability to "multiply". A piece of wedding cake is sent to friends, relatives and acquaintances who could not be at the wedding itself, it is stored, and the upper tier of the same cake is served for the christening of the first child. The fact is that the traditional wedding cake, according to the method of preparation, is similar to the British pudding and can really be stored for a long time, while remaining edible. In the UK, there is an ancient tradition of giving a newborn several personal names, today there are usually two of them: "first" and "middle", however, there can be as many "middle" names as you like. It happens that a geographical name or a common name acts as a "middle" name. This tradition has now spread to all English-speaking countries. The "average" name is rarely used in everyday life. Yes, and usually only his relatives know him. It is said that the custom of giving a person two names was associated with a large number of similar names and surnames, and with the help of a "middle" name it was easier to distinguish one John Smith from another. Often the middle name comes from one of the older family members, or one of the royal names is chosen, for example, Margaret or Charles.
The methods of education, as well as life in Britain in general, have changed a lot over the last century. Every decade brought with it new trends and ideas. Suffice it to recall that many of the most significant cultural phenomena of the XX century appeared in Britain. Today, there is often talk that in young families parents do not know how to behave with children. The harsh methods of the past have already been forgotten. It is not customary to punish children severely. On the other hand, not all moms and dads are able to cope with small whims in other ways, as a result, the child becomes a family "dictator". However, this problem exists in many countries. Perhaps the main values of the British education system are democracy and respect for children. One of the main ideas: "A child is a person." Parents try to communicate with children, solve problems with words, not prohibitions, explain. Even in public life, for example, at school, the opinion of the child is often taken into account. It is believed that the English are usually more strict with children, and in Scotland children are allowed more. Parts of the United Kingdom differ from each other in culture, traditions, and language. Foreigners often refer to the whole of Great Britain as "England", which risks offending the Welsh, Scots and Irish very much. The process of unification of the British Isles under the rule of the British was long and bloody. Old "wounds" sometimes painfully respond even in modern peaceful reality.
The children of Scotland, Wales and Ireland are brought up in deep respect for their own national culture, history and language, which is partially taught in schools, there are TV channels and radio stations. The peoples of Britain are very proud of their land, traditions and heroes, and all without exception, and ancient wars, and modern film actors and athletes, and this pride, precisely for their own, is brought up from an early age.
