Abstract:
The importance of the English language in the modern world at the moment is
quite great. In all countries of the world, the study of English is given great importance, as it is
considered the most commonly used language. Listening is one of the most important essential
skills in English, and any skill must be developed and taught. This article discusses the use of the
communicative approach in teaching listening. The effectiveness of the communicative approach
for the development of listening skills is considered.
Keywords:
communicative approach, listening skills, teaching listening, foreign
languages
In every person's life, language plays a special role. Language is the process of
communication, the transmission of information, the expression of one's creativity, and a source
of inspiration. With the help of understanding the language and the ability to effectively apply it,
it gives students access to knowledge, to achieve a certain significant role in society. “Language
is the most important wealth. People use language to communicate their ideas and
information”[1]. For language to serve as a means of communication there must be a single or
similar understanding of the reality behind it. Foreign languages form a person's personality and
are considered an additional means of social communication, with the help of which it is possible
to realize broader opportunities for interpersonal and professional communication and develop
the communicative potential of students.
The purpose of teaching a foreign language is the practical knowledge of the language,
the assimilation of the language system, and the acquisition of language skills [2]. Everything
that a person learns acquires to use. Therefore, the learning conditions must correspond to the
conditions in which this knowledge, skills, and abilities will be utilized. Nevertheless, often after
graduation, students have problems with spontaneous speech skills, their meager vocabulary, and
the consistency of the design of grammatical structures.
The word “communication” is very often found in the methods of teaching a foreign
language. This means speaking with the help of language. That is why it is suggested to use a
communicative approach as a principle of teaching a foreign language. Any teaching that
pursues practical learning goals is focused on communication since it teaches communication
through language. Discussing real-life circumstances attracts students and causes keen anxiety
and a desire to share their ideas. The main goal of the communicative approach is to help the
student to get rid of the notorious language barrier. This determines the relevance of the
communicative approach to teaching foreign languages.
The communicative approach is based on the statement that to successfully master a
foreign language, students must know not only language forms but also have an idea of how to
use them for real communication purposes. Modern communication-oriented learning prepares
students to use language in real life. The predominant feature of the communicative approach is
not the memorization of words, phrases, and the competent use of grammar, but real
communication between students, during which memorization of the material will occur during
speech activity.
