The communicative approach to language learning involves the integration of listening
and speaking. Particular focus is given to the situation or context in which a particular skill
should be used. The communicative approach is used in teaching four basic language skills:
reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Listening and speaking are interactive skills that
influence each other. Speaking and writing are expressive language skills, while reading and
listening are receptive language skills.
In foreign language teaching, listening is considered one of the four language skills that
learners find harder. According to Anderson and Lynch, [3] listening skills are important, as are
speaking skills, since for most people; it is difficult to communicate if these two types of skills
do not develop together. This thought implies that without experience in listening skills, usually,
people will find it difficult to communicate with others, they need listening skills to understand
what someone is saying.
Listening leads to understanding facts and ideas. This is considered one of the most
important parts of verbal communication and is very essential for communicative ability. It is
impossible to learn a language and use it without the ability to listen. Moreover, listening can
correspond to the type of communication that reflects the needs of a person and the nature of his
activities. Involving the listener in the communication process simultaneously provides the
listener with the necessary speech means, which are drawn from the auditory speech stimulus
and acquires the ability to participate in speech communication in a foreign language.
In the communicative approach, the perception of speech by ear is one of the important
factors. In the process of listening to speech, such a necessary skill as listening takes place and is
formed. Listening helps students develop skills that are formed in the process of a
communicative approach to learning, therefore listening is an essential component in the
communicative approach to teaching foreign languages.
In conclusion, the communicative approach to teaching listening in foreign languages can
be the leading one among all teaching approaches. Since the communicative approach is aimed
at communication and learning naturally, thanks to communication during lessons, and strives to
fully immerse people in the language environment. Using the communicative approach in
teaching listening in a foreign language provides for a speech orientation of learning, provides
individualization of the learning process, and takes into account the functionality of speech.
