Chapter 3. Annotation of Verbal Adjective
3.1.1 Theoretical Description of Atoochtuk

The non-finite form of verbs: Gerund, Infinitive and Participle are the most mysterious

phenomenon of grammar and in the field of Corpus POS tagging with an uncertain status in it.
Having separate verbs and nouns, grammar creates non-finite form of verbs which either
duplicate or compensate the missing elements of these both parts of speech, providing verbs with
nominal, adverbial or adjectival functions and noun, adjective with verb properties. The non-
finite form of the English language inherited some morphological characteristics of verbs and
syntactical characteristics of nouns. It is difficult to identify The Kyrgyz Special Form of the
Verb (SFV) (Chakchyl, Kyimyl Atooch, Atoochtuk) as non-finite form of verbs as in the English
language, because they conjugate and express Tense category as verbs which are the main reason
of not being named as non-finite form of verbs. The Verbal Adjective (Atoochtuk) as a special
form of the verb has both morphological and syntactical properties of verbs and adjective. If
English Participle functions as compensating components of the missing elements of verbs and
nouns, The Verbal Adjectives function as substitutional or additional elements of verbs and
nouns. Namely, they create and enrich language with syntactical transforms in expressing of
propositions of sentences.
The Special Form of Verb (SFV) in the modern Kyrgyz language is a verb-noun form
combining the grammatical features of the adjective, adverb and the noun. However, to
understand it properly, the peculiarities of adverb, adjective and the noun is should be taken into
account, since the SFV possess the features of all.

The verbal adjective (VA) as a special form of the verb is determined by the essence
of this form, which is regularly formed with the help of special unified affixes only from the
verbal stems and like any form. According to Admony’s opinion, the verbal adjective is one of
the grammar phenomenon which has no certain status among grammar categories. Some
linguists consider that VA is the main special verb form, which includes verbal and adjectival
properties and indicates actions attributed to a person or object as their signs. Others consider,
that VA has intermediate position between verb and adjective, the third consider that it is a
separate part of speech giving it a special place among the other part of speech.
