Doubtful actions of V.Yanukovych
Relying on the comparative analysis provided by Kuzio (2012),
is it seen that the idea of
siloviki,
which are military forces aimed
at controlling the government, does not fi t into the context of a
democratic state. Similar analogues for Russian
siloviki
under Vladimir
Putin’s rule were in the USSR and in independent Ukraine during the
V.Yanukovych period. He came to power in February 2010, leading to
the gradual growth of military forces. Since V.Yanukovych originated
from Donetsk region, people from this region (the Family) were given
special priorities, political and military power.
This monopoly may result in the further growth of the national debt
and dependence of the Ukrainian economy on external factors.
In November 2013, the president’s refusal to sign an association
agreement with the EU led to the political crisis and mass protests in
Ukraine in 2014.
Although Yanukovych was trying to provide arguments for his
action, it seems that he worried about the Russian factor too much,
eventually losing the trust of the society. An equally important
problem is corruption, numerous scandals, hidden alliances, regional
