Yushchenko is also known for his threats about expelling Russia’s
Fleets from Sevastopol port before the expiration of the treaty.
During Yushchenko’s presidency, relations between relations with
Russia worsened again, because of the pursuit of strengthening relations
with the EU and NATO, along with limiting Russia’s infl uence in
Ukraine.
For Yushchenko, losing the second presidential tour was the biggest
obstacle in the path of developing relations between Ukraine and the
EU.
The problem is not even that the authorities are trying to abuse
their powers or completely dissolve control. It lurks deeper, indeed,
every leader of Ukraine is trying to blame the previous one for this or
that political decision and direct national policy, as well as the foreign
policy along a completely diff erent path. A consistent change of power
from a pro-Russian candidate to a pro-Western one entails many
losses and misunderstandings. The shifting governmental powers and
decisions are also connected to the previous point, i.e., the society with
too untwined political views.
