Exercise 10. Point out the Absolute Constructions and state what kind of adverbial modifier they express. Translate into Russian.
1. His tale told, he put his head back and laughed. 2. Then, with her heart beating faster, she went up and rang the bell. 3. Catherine looked at me, her eyes happy. 4. His mind occupied in his research, he did not perceive that daylight would soon end. 5. The door and window of the vacant room being open, we looked in. 6. It being pretty far, we decided to take a taxi. 7. Time permitting; I shall come to see you. 8. Game over, he went home without a penny. 9. He was walking ahead of me along Fifth Avenue in his alert, aggressive way, his hands out a little from his body as if to fight off interference, his head moving sharply here and there. 10. On the last night, with my trunk packed and my car sold to the grocer, I went over and looked at the huge incoherent failure of a house once more. 11. With the inflation growing, the people’s purchasing power has declined. 12. Confidence in Britain’s future can be restored, with prices pegged and production planned. 13. He held the child, gazing at the woman, her mouth moving. 14. With her heart beating fast , she rang the bell. 15. Dinner over, we went home. 16. He lay on the bed, with his eyes shut. 17. The dog was near him with its nose turned heavenward. 18. The weather being cold, he didn’t want to loiter.


Exercise 11. Translate into English, using Absolute Constructions.
1. Когда все приготовления были закончены, дети отправились в поход. 2. Когда торжественное заседание (grand meeting) окончилось, начался концерт. 3. Мэдвиг стоял у окна, спиной к двери, и смотрел на темную улицу. 4. Комната стала выглядеть уютнее, когда диван переставили к окну. 5. Когда все стало известно, Мэри уже не могла скрывать правду. 6. Мужчина устало шел домой, а ветер поднимал пыль вверх резкими порывами, словно хотел сбить его с пути. 7. Ему было трудно идти, так как ветер усиливался. 8. Старик подошел к двери, держа руку в кармане потертых брюк. 9. Когда урок закончился, Кэт сразу же побежала в сад. 10. Наверно, покой я обрету только тогда, когда умру. 11. Так как дверь была открыта, мы вошли внутрь и осмотрелись. 12. Она посмотрела на него с улыбкой на лице. 13. Мы не сможем продолжить работу в саду, пока дождь не кончится. 14. Завершив работу, она собрала вещи со стола и тихонько вышла. 15. Так как никого не было дома, она написала записку и оставила ее на столе. 16. Если погода позволит, мы пойдем на каток. 17. Exercise 12. State the function of the Participle and Participial Constructions.
1. Vincent glanced over at Christine knitting by the fire. 2. Collingwood did not usually utter a word unless spoken to. 3. He listened as though brooding. 4. She saw Abraham coming up the street carrying a blue cotton umbrella. 5. One evening he was seen… going into this very house, but was never seen coming out of it. 6. Upon her throat were the marks of teeth having opened the vein. 7. Thinking this was a young earl whom he had met with in society, Aubrey seemed pleased. 8. The buying habits of the Americans have changed in recent years. 9. I saw him opening a chest of rubies to ease, with their crimson-lighted depths, the gnawings of his broken heart. 10. “This is a terrible mistake”, he said, shaking his head from side to side. 11. He stopped as if rooted to the ground. 12. She went outside, the red shawl over her shoulders. 13. There was Kate Appleton crying and whimpering and young Will Appleton knocking people aside. 14. Divorced twice, he was wise enough not to get married again. 15. Having paid his fare, he entered the carriage. 16. Her spirit, though crushed, was not broken. 17. I’ll have to return home if discovered. 18. Then he started out, bag and overcoat in his hand, to get his cup of coffee. 19. Being a smart girl she guessed the reason at once. 20. Having written some letters he went to post them. 21. I appeared rather like one doomed by slavery to toil in the mines, than an artist occupied by his favourite employment.
