STUDY OF PICKERING EMULSION STABILITY BASED ON PARAFFIN
OIL/WATER

Emulsions that have been stabilized by solid particles rather than surfactants are called
Pickering emulsions. In these emulsions, solid particles accumulate at the oil-water interface.
Pickering emulsions are widely used in the preparation of medicaments, cosmetics, and food
products. Pickering emulsions have advantages, such as chemical stability, environmental
friendliness, and low cost. Bentonite pink clay of Tagan origin was used in the work to stabilize the
Pickering emulsion. In Kazakhstan, the resources of this clay amount to 10.6 million tons.
To obtain the Pickering emulsion, particles of pink bentonite clay were used. An elemental
and oxide analysis of the clay was previously performed. Also, the sizes of clay particles were
determined by the method of dynamic light scattering. The particle size of dispersed bentonite pink
clay is 47.13 microns. In addition, the clay structure was studied by scanning electron microscopy.
An X-ray phase analysis of pink clay powder was carried out to determine its phase composition.
Moreover, micrographs of the obtained emulsions were made using an optical microscope. It was
found that based on pink bentonite particles, multiple stable Pickering emulsions can be obtained.
The effect of concentration on the stability of the Pickering emulsion with different concentrations
of clay suspension from 2 to 10 % was investigated. It was determined that with an increase in the
concentration of clay, the stability of the obtained emulsions increases. At C=10% aqueous
suspension of particles and a ratio of water to oil of 4:6 and 5:5, stable emulsions were obtained,
with a lifetime of 1175 min and 1060 min, respectively. The most optimal concentration for
obtaining stable emulsion is 3 % when mixing for 15 minutes at a speed of 19900 rpm. Several
experiments were carried out with clays measuring 47.13 microns, less than 63 microns, and less
than 125 microns. It was established that the smaller the size of the clay, the more stable emulsions
are formed. It was determined that when using mineral oil instead of paraffin, the lifetime of the
emulsion also rises. Furthermore, experiments were conducted to determine the effect of surfactants
such as TWEEN 80 and TWEEN 20 on the stability of the emulsion. It was found that with
TWEEN 80 at a concentration of 0.001 %, more stable emulsions are obtained. The results obtained
in this work can be used to create different types of cosmetics and pharmaceuticals based on
Pickering emulsions stabilized with bentonite pink clay particles.
