- Добрый день, - сказал Маленький принц.
|
"Good morning," said the little prince.
|
- Добрый день, - отозвался стрелочник.
|
"Good morning," said the railway switchman.
|
- Что ты здесь делаешь? - спросил Маленький принц.
|
"What do you do here?" the little prince asked.
|
- Сортирую пассажиров, - отвечал стрелочник. - Отправляю их в поездах по тысяче человек за раз - один поезд направо, другой налево.
|
"I sort out travellers, in bundles of a thousand," said the switchman. "I send off the trains that carry them: now to the right, now to the left."
|
И скорый поезд, сверкая освещенными окнами, с громом промчался мимо, и будка стрелочника вся задрожала.
|
And a brilliantly lighted express train shook the switchman's cabin as it rushed by with a roar like thunder.
|
- Как они спешат, - удивился Маленький принц. - Чего они ищут?
|
"They are in a great hurry," said the little prince. "What are they looking for?"
|
- Даже сам машинист этого не знает, - сказал стрелочник.
|
"Not even the locomotive engineer knows that," said the switchman.
|
И в другую сторону, сверкая огнями, с громом пронесся еще один скорый поезд.
|
And a second brilliantly lighted express thundered by, in the opposite direction.
|
- Они уже возвращаются? - спросил Маленький принц.
|
"Are they coming back already?" demanded the little prince.
|
- Нет, это другие, - сказал стрелочник. - Это встречный.
|
"These are not the same ones," said the switchman. "It is an exchange."
|
- Им было нехорошо там, где они были прежде?
|
"Were they not satisfied where they were?" asked the little prince.
|
- Там хорошо, где нас нет, - сказал стрелочник.
|
"No one is ever satisfied where he is," said the switchman.
|
И прогремел, сверкая, третий скорый поезд.
|
And they heard the roaring thunder of a third brilliantly lighted express.
|
- Они хотят догнать тех, первых? - спросил Маленький принц.
|
"Are they pursuing the first travellers?" demanded the little prince.
|
- Ничего они не хотят, - сказал стрелочник. - Они спят в вагонах или просто сидят и зевают. Одни только дети прижимаются носами к окнам.
|
"They are pursuing nothing at all," said the switchman. "They are asleep in there, or if they are not asleep they are yawning. Only the children are flattening their noses against the windowpanes."
|
- Одни только дети знают, чего ищут, - промолвил Маленький принц.
|
"Only the children know what they are looking for," said the little prince.
|
- Они отдают всю душу тряпочной кукле, и она становится им очень-очень дорога, и если ее у них отнимут, дети плачут...
|
"They waste their time over a rag doll and it becomes very important to them; and if anybody takes it away from them, they cry..."
|
- Их счастье, - сказал стрелочник.
|
"They are lucky," the switchman said.
|
