Ukrainian relations?”. There are a number of factors infl uencing
Ukraine’s decisions in conducting bilateral relations with the EU and
bilateral relations with Russia. These relations seem to be fl uctuating
until the fi nal point, Ukrainian crisis 2014 and Russian-Ukrainian War.
The paper starts with the analysis of Ukrainian national identity.
It is important to fi rst recognize how Ukrainians position themselves
and how they diff er from Russia in the aspect of national identity. This
study may develop the understanding whether Ukraine considers to
have more similarities with Russian identity or European.
After that, fi rstly including the pursuit of Western model of
democracy. There is a huge diff erence in how democratic Ukraine
is and how democratic it wants to be. Are the obstacles for
democratization only inside the country or it is coming from the
outside sources? Is the pursuit of democracy a desire to leave Post-
Communist space or a willingness for independent development?
The next point is the informal division of Ukraine, which is going right
after. Furthermore, the division of the country directly aff ects politics,
which can be redirected with the elections of a new leader, either pro-
Russian or pro-Western. Power struggles among Ukrainian leaders
from 1991 to 2014 are shown as examples. Finally, we are moving
to the energy crisis resulting from the cut of natural gas supplies and
worsening relations between Ukraine and Russia.
The fi nal part is devoted to fi nding possible areas for the future
development of the country.
The main hypothesis around which the data has been collected is
that ‘the lack of unity among leaders have caused instability of the
county resulting in worsening relations with the Russian Federation.’
In respect that such a hypothesis might be too quick to judge, the paper
moves gradually to the fi nal point where it can be denied or proven.
