country had systematic legal elections according to the constitution,
except the 2004 elections ‘falsifi ed’ by Yanukovych, which gave a start
to the Orange revolution.
On the other hand, Constructivism cannot explain the Ukrainian
tendency of changing positions towards the Russian Federation
and the West. Yet, Constructivism itself denies the importance of
international organisations and relies on the state’s own power. Ukraine
is a member of 31 IOs, which is not such a big number. The Russian
Federation, in comparison, is a member or 53 institutions. Moreover,
Ukraine tends to avoid participating in organisations with Russia as
the leading country, except for the Commonwealth of Independent
States.
Ukraine can also be viewed from the idea of Post-Soviet
Democratization, which was described by Vladimir Gel’man in 2001.
Leaving Communist ideologies and building a new independent nation
is a hard path. The Russian Federation seems to be representing the
Soviet Legacy, from which Ukraine wants to be independent. Their
aim of democratization is barely possible in the Post-Soviet space with
the presence of the Russian infl uence. For instance, Latvia, Lithuania
and Estonia have lifted democratization only after leaving the Soviet
entities and declaring neutrality from the CIS.
Nevertheless, Russian infl uence is still present in Ukraine for more
or less extent, especially in politics. Ukrainian leaders used to take into
account their future reactions while making political decisions.
