Ukrainian National Identity
Ukraine takes roots from both Slavic and European histories, whose
complexity lies in considering themselves as either brother nations
with Russia or as similar ethnicity to Eastern European states, such as
Poland, Moldova, etc.
As Goble (2016) says, Russian national identity is considered to be
diffi
cult and self-centered, i.e., the Russians would never accept other
subcultures and ethnic minorities living under their rule, instead trying
to implement them under a single Russian culture as the dominant one.
In Goble and Svyatenkov’s view, the purpose because Russian leaders
united other nations with theirs is only the land. Furthermore, they add
that ‘signs of Soviet racism are still present’.
