(c) 4. The Habit Past Tense (Адат өткөн чак)
The Habit Past Tense is used for actions or events that ‘used to’ or ‘would’ take place, but
do not any longer. Moreover, especially when recalling memories, using in combination with
adverbs such as:
мурун
‘before’,
мурда
‘a long time ago’,
бир канча жыл мурун
‘some years
ago’. E.g. Тынччылык кезинде бул
заводдо кырк беш миң адам
иштечү
. (К. Маликов)
[Tynchchılık kezde bul zavoddo kırk besh min adam ishtechü] Lit.: ‘
There used to work forty-
five thousand employees in the factory during peaceful periods.’
The Habit Past
Tense is formed
by adding to the stem of the verb the ‘habitual ending’ –
chu (чу
). The habitual ending, as usual,
can be changed into -chi/-chy/-chu on the basis of vowel harmony and consonant assimilation.
men bar+chu+mun I used to go.
sen bar+chu+sun You (sg. inf.) used to go.
siz bar+chu+sunuz You (sg. f.) used to go.
al bar+chu He/She used to go.
biz bar+chu+buz We used to go.
