Functions of the Participle
Both Participles I and II are used in the functions of
1)
attribute
2
) adverbial modifier
3
) part of simple predicate
4)
part of compound nominal predicate.
1) In the function of an
attribute
Participles I Indefinite Active and
Participle II can be placed in
pre-position
and
post-position,
i.e. they
precede the noun they modify or follow it.
The
flowing
water is always cool.
Проточная
вода всегда прохладная.
He answered through the
locked
door.
Он ответил сквозь
закрытую
дверь.
The Participle in post-position as a rule has one or several
accompanying words.
Translation:
by an attributive clause or Participle.
The building
housing
the University will soon be built.
Здание,
в котором будет размещаться университет
, будет
скоро построено.
The picture
seen
by you at the Art museum is really beautiful.
Картина,
которую вы видели
в Художественном музее, дей-
ствительно прекрасна.
The method
developed
made it possible to achieve good results.

Participle I Indefinite Passive is very seldom used as an attribute.
There was one line
being laid out
to within a few blocks of his
new home... which interested him greatly (Dreiser).

Participle I Perfect Active and Passive is not used attributively.
Participle I in the function of an attribute cannot express priority;
therefore it often happens that when in Russian we have причастие
