Task 2. Paraphrase the sentences using the Infinitive as the Subject 

with the introductory ‘it’

. 

Translate the sentences.

1. The repair of the room will take two days. 2. I was amazed to see 

him there. 3. There is no necessity to mention that. 4. Any thought of 

tomorrow depressed him. 5. The restoration of the church was quite 

impossible. 6. The recollection of that incident made everybody laugh. 

7. He felt ashamed when he remembered everything. 8. He was very 

wise if he avoided such a situation. 9. We were disappointed when we 

heard his report. 10. There was no return to the past life.

The Infinitive as a predicative or part of a predicative.

In this function the Infinitive is translated by Russian Infinitive. 

Very often the conjunction «чтобы» is used.

His duty was 

to observe

 the operation of this system.

Task 1. Translate the phrases in brackets using the Infinitive as 

predicative.

1. The main problem is (помочь Тому не потерять веру в себя).

опасности).

4. To act like this means (потерять последний шанс).

5. The first thing to do is (связаться с ним).

6. To ask her a straight question will mean (оскорбить ее).

7. My idea was (потребовать полное объяснение) of what they 

plan to discuss.

NOTE: 

In the function of part of a predicative (after the adjectives: 

hard, difficult, easy, (im)possible, (un)safe, (un)pleasant, etc.) we always 

use the Indefinite Infinitive Active.

15. It was impossible to make friends with David.

Task 3. Translate the sentences using the Infinitive as part of 

predicative.

1. От дурных привычек трудно избавиться.
