| 3. The Subjective Participial Construction
The Subjective Participial Construction is a construction in which
the participle (mostly Participle I) is in predicate relation to a noun in
the common case or a pronoun in the nominative case, which is the
subject of the sentence.
Translation:
a complex sentence
is generally used; the principal
clause is of the type which in Russian syntax is called
“indefinite
personal” (слышали / видели/ заметили, что . . .)
. The peculiarity of
this construction is that it does not serve as one part of the sentence: the
nominal part serves as subject; the participle is the part of compound
verbal predicate.
The construction is used after the verbs of:
a)
Sense perception
(to see, to hear, to watch, to notice, to feel);
Several boys
were seen
riding
on horseback across the field.
Видели,
как несколько мальчиков ехали
через поле верхом
на лошади.
b)
Mental activity
(to find, to understand, to show, to keep, to
consider, to regard).
The farmers
are considered (regarded)
as doing it
.
Считают, что
фермеры делают
это.
