3. Income (
income
). Today, smoking is more common among
low-income individuals in developed countries (Healton, Nelson,
2004; Siahpush et al., 2005; Binkley, 2010). In contrast, in low-
income countries, cigarettes have traditionally been regarded as luxury
goods and their consumption has been characteristic of high-income
individuals, but there is evidence that this is changing in a number of
developing countriesя (Verguet et al., 2013). It is therefore assumed
that individuals’ attitudes towards the ban on smoking in public places
will also depend on their income. This variable was modelled on the
qualitative answers to the question of which of the fi ve income groups
individuals could belong to:
- income_low
= 1, if individuals chose the answer «to the products
of money enough, but buying clothes causes serious diffi
culties», and 0
in all other cases;
- income_aver
= 1, if individuals have enough for food and clothing,
but purchase things
Long-term use is a problem, and 0 in all other cases;
- income_high
= 1, if individuals can aff ord to acquire durable goods,
but it is diffi
cult for them to acquire really expensive things, and 0
In all other cases;
- income_upper
= 1, if individuals can aff ord reasonably expensive
purchases - apartment, dacha and much more, and 0 in all other cases.
4. Age (age). Many works emphasize the peculiarities of youth
smoking. The models evaluated used both age variables (in years) and
age group variables:
age25
- up to 25 years;
age35
- from 25 to 35;
age45
- from 35 to 45;
age55
- from 45 to 55;
age65
- from 55 to 65;
age65 +
-- over 65
5. Health status is assessed by the following indicators:
sah
is a self-assessment of health that takes on meaning 1 if an
individual assesses his or her health as good or very good, and 0
otherwise;
chronic
diseases (1 if the individual has chronic diseases and 0 if not);
(1-sah)(1-chronic)
- This variable distinguishes among those who
rate their health as poor individuals who do not have chronic diseases.
