Purification of wastewater by flocculation method has been widely used
worldwide. Dimethylacrylamide copolymers and their derivatives have been
applied due to its good water solubility, non-toxicity, high charge density and
molecular weight and low cost in the international market makes their usage
even more beneficial [1, 2, 3].

radical
copolymerization
of
N,N-dimethyl-N,N-
diallylammonium chloride with N,N-dimethylacrylamide has been synthesized.
Structure of the copolymers were investigated by FTIR, 1H NMR spectroscopies,
and conductometric titration method. Monomer reactivity ratios were determined
by the application of Finemann-Ross, Kelen-Tudos and inverted Finemann-Ross
methods. It was found that N,N-dimethyl-N,N-diallylammonium chloride is less
reactive than N,N-dimethylacrylamide. Flocculation of bentonite suspensions,
pig, chicken and cow manure slurries were investigated using the copolymer
P(DMDAAC-DMAA) with various compositions and homopolymer
P(DMDAAC) by turbidimetric method and the zeta potentials of each
samples were tested. The results indicated that copolymer P(DMDAAC-
DMAA) (with molar composition 70:30) has the best flocculating ability
compared to the other compositions and homopolymer P(DMDAAC).
