COPPER ION

Complex compounds are chemical compounds that consist of
a central metal ion or atom
bonded to one or more ligands (molecules or ions) through coordinate covalent bonds. These
compounds
are essential in many fields, including medicine,
materials science, and industrial
chemistry, because of their unique properties and applications.
One example of a complex copper compound is formed during the reaction between copper
nitrate and sodium alginate. Sodium alginate is a natural polymer derived from seaweed that
contains carboxylate groups (-COO-) that can act as ligands for metal ions. When sodium alginate
is mixed with copper nitrate, the copper ions form coordinate covalent bonds with the carboxylate
groups in the sodium alginate molecules, resulting in the formation of a complex copper compound.
The complex copper compound formed in this reaction has several important properties and
applications. Firstly, it has excellent catalytic properties and can be used as a catalyst in many
chemical reactions. Secondly, it has antimicrobial properties and can
be used as an antimicrobial
agent in medical and industrial applications. Thirdly, it has unique optical properties and can be
used as a colorant or pigment in a variety of applications, including textiles, paints, and cosmetics.
Copper nitrate was used as a precursor, while sodium alginate was used as a stabilizing agent
to form a gel-like matrix for the copper ions. The resulting complex compound embedded in a
sodium alginate matrix were characterized
using various methods, including conductometry, pH-
metric titration, IR spectroscopy. In the determination of complexation by conductometric titration,
sodium alginate was titrated with a solution of copper nitrate. As a result, it was found that the ratio
between sodium alginate and metal ion was 2.5 mol : 1 mol. This means that one mole of copper
will bind to 2.5 mole of polymer link. The analysis using infrared spectroscopy has revealed that the
film contains 0.1 mol/l of sodium alginate and 0.1 mol/l of copper nitrate crystallohydrate.
This research aims to further investigate the catalytic properties and potential applications of
the complex copper compound formed as a result of the reaction between copper nitrate and sodium
alginate. Overall, it should be noted that obtaining copper complex compound from copper nitrate
using sodium alginate is a promising area of research that has potential applications in various
fields, making it an important and valuable topic of study.
