STABILIZING AGENTS

Acetaldehyde is an intermediate product used in the synthesis of substances widely used in
the food industry, adhesives, and construction (paint, emulsion). The synthesis of acetaldehyde is
based on the Wacker process. The catalyst used in this process has several disadvantages: the high
cost of the reagent used; the low solubility of palladium chloride in water, respectively, leads to
corrosion of the hydrogen chloride reactor used to create a homogeneous system; an excess of
chloride ions slows down the rate of the reaction.
Therefore, the study aims to synthesize a catalyst based on gold nanoparticles embedded in a
cryogel matrix and evaluate its catalytic activity in the process of ethanol oxidation under mild
conditions (at low temperatures, and atmospheric pressure), resulting in the formation of an
industrially important intermediate product.
We synthesized successfully gold nanoparticles at the moment. Synthesis is made by the
reduction of gold salts in an aqueous solution, with the reducing agent, Sodium Borohydride. And,
it is important to use stabilizing agents to minimize the chance of agglomeration and provide the
controlled growth of nanoparticles. As stabilizing agents, we used polymers, in particular, Polyvinyl
alcohol (PVA) and Sodium Alginate (SA, a copolymer of β-D-mannuronic acid and α-L-guluronic
acid units), they are very attractive because of their biocompatibility and biodegradability.
Characteristics of nanoparticles were examined by Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, Dynamic
Light Scattering, pH, Conductometry, Viscosimeter, and TEM. Also, found the best ratio between
aqueous gold solution and stabilizing agent.
In further research, gold nanoparticles will be immobilized in crygel.
