The purpose of research work is relying on the hydro-distillation method using Clevenger
apparatus get the essential oil and offer the new way standardization process for received product
from the Melissa officinalis L.
Nowadays, the standardization of Melissa officinalis L. essential
oil on the content of
caryophyllene not yet proposed according to the State Pharmacopoeia of the Republic of
Kazakhstan. In this study a number of works have been done to obtain and standardize essential oil
from natural product for the content of caryophyllene oxide. In the Clevenger device, sample-mixed
water is heated to a high temperature and then boiled to remove volatile components.
Oil-rich layers
are produced and the essential oil separated.
Numbers of experiments like quantitative test with chromatographic method, tests on density
of product, test on solubility and refractive index were done for standatization of essential oil of
Melissa officinalis L. for the content of caryophyllene. For gas chromatography the Agilent
6890/5973 chromato-mass spectrometer was used.
After completing the process, some natural
products like 2,6-Octadienal, 3, 7 - dimethyl- , caryophyllene oxide, 2,6-Octadien-1-ol, 3,7-
dimethyl- were detected in the structure of Melissa officinalis L.. This can be proved by some
spotted intensive peaks on the obtained graph. These results show that Melissa officinalis L. contain
these natural products. Overall, 9 peaks were detected which proves authenticity of our plant
material and optimized scheme of production of essential oil.

is a terpene hydrocarbon. It is colorless oily liquid with a sharp woody
smell. It is soluble
in nonpolar organic solvents, insoluble in water. Caryophyllene is used to
compose perfume compositions, in the production of perfumes for soap, cosmetic products, in the
synthesis of some fragrant substances and also used as anti-inflammatory and anti-stress component
in some biologically active additives.
The results of the experiment can be used in other study works as authentic resource and in
projects which require the scheme of production and standartization of essential oils from Melissa
officinalis L. for the content of caryophyllene.
