In several different phases carbon manifests itself such asgraphite, nanotubes,
fullerenes, diamond and diamond-like carbon etc. Due to its ability to hybridize in
several forms such aslinear coordinations (sp
1
), trigonal (sp
2
)and tetrahedral (sp
3
).
Diamond-like carbon (DLC) is an important form of amorphous carbon consisting
of a mixture of both sp
3
and sp
2
coordinated carbon.
Diamond-like carbon (DLC) has been subjected intense research effort over
the last three decades. This material was successfully fabricated using ion beam
deposition. Owing to the presence of high fraction of sp
3
bondings, DLC exhibits
numerous attractive properties that closely resemble those of diamond, such as
high mechanical hardness, stiffness, wear resistance, chemical inertness and optical
transparency, and low coefficient of friction. This moment we know three main
methods for modifying amorphous carbon coatings:
–
process parameter variations during coating,
–
additional elements in the coating (doping),
–
coating architecture, variation of properties in layered coating stacks.
The
methods
described
to
modify
the
coating
properties:
ion
implantation, thermal annealing andphysicochemical active post treatment can also
be controlled andcombined to tailor the coating properties.
Nowadays tribological and mechanical properties of DLC coatings are of
outstanding interest for industrial applications. As a result of these properties they
could be used in metallurgical, biomedical and aeronautical applications. Some
specific applications include protective coatings for heart valves, inject printer
cartridges, prostheses, magnetic discs and other tribological related applications.
