INVESTIGATION OF THE PROPERTIES OF COMPOSITIONS BASED ON 
POLYVINYL ALCOHOL AND GELATIN

In recent years, the search for polymer carriers of drug to obtain effective composite drugs 
forms with prolonged action has attracted increasing interest and is aimed at creating materials with 
unique properties through the use of original and simple production methods.
In this work, we studied the possibility of obtaining composite materials on the basis of 
natural polymers – polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and gelatin with the addition of biologically active 
complex - alchidine, for further use as carriers of medicinal substances. The choice of PVA is also 
due to a number of valuable properties: high swelling capacity, indifference to other raw materials, 
non-toxicity, sorption capacity, and availability. For this purpose, different concentrations of the gel 
were obtained, such as 10 %, 13 %, 15 %. 
In this regard, the possibility of obtaining gels of PVA and its compositions with gelatin was 
studied in the work. 
Composite gels were obtained and the morphological structure of the gels and the influence of 
various factors on the swelling properties of the gels were studied. 
The properties of composite materials will largely depend on its constituent components. In 
this regard, the viscosity, density and melting point of the obtained gels were studied. As a result of 
the conducted swelling studies, it was revealed that the values of the swelling ability of composite 
gels are significantly lower compared to the degrees of swelling of conventional PVA gels. With 
increasing of the content of gelatin in the composite system, decreasing of swelling degree is 
observed.
The homogeneity of the resulting compositions is also observed by the method of rotational 
viscosity.
Thus, as a result of the conducted studies, it was found that the nature of the interaction of 
gelatin with PVA depends on the concentration of the polymer. A promising possibility of using 
gelatin and PVA to create compositions with good stability and mutual compatibility is 
investigated. We suppose that the obtained results improve the possibility of using our compositions 
in medical purposes.
