Emulsions
stabilized by solid colloidal particles at the boundary of the two immiscible liquids
became known in the last century due to the research work of Ramsden and Pickering, and in honor
of the scientist was named as Pickering Emulsion. Clays, starch, magnetic particles, ions and oxides
of metal nanoparticles etc., have been studied and applied in Pickering emulsions. They constitute
curious categories of silicate materials according to their surface area, chemical inertia,
biocompatibility and colloidal properties. In medicine, pharmaceutics and cosmetics kaolinite,
bentonite and montmorillonite are mostly applied solid particles, according to their structure,
morphological features and low-level of toxicity. The uses of clay minerals in broad areas are
associated to the concern in development of the economical and safety materials.
The stabilization by micro- and nanoparticles of kaolin clay deposits of the Republic of
Kazakhstan for the production of Pickering emulsion has not yet been investigated. The moments of
interaction of clay with the interfacial surface have not been studied, depending on the nature,
elemental, oxide and mineral composition, particle shape and size, oxide composition,
homogenization parameters and the possibility of using kaolin for the development of cosmetic
emulsions. Therefore, the main purpose of this work is to study emulsions stabilized by particles of
kaolinite clay from the Alekseevsky deposit of the Republic of Kazakhstan to obtain safe and
environmentally friendly emulsifiers of natural origin for further cream production.
The elemental, oxide and mineral analysis, clay particle sizes by dynamic light scattering, the
structure using scanning electron microscopy were studied.
The influence of the concentration, time and speed of mixing, the ratio of water to oil phase
on the stability of the Pickering emulsion was investigated. It has been established that direct stable
Pickering emulsions can be obtained on the basis of kaolin particles. Stable emulsions were
obtained with C=3% aqueous suspension of particles and a ratio of 4:6 at 13400 rpm during 10 min
mixing with homogenizer. It has been established that the higher the concentration of kaolin
particles in water, the more stable the emulsion is. The results obtained in this work can be used to
create a cream of various types based on emulsions stabilized with kaolin particles.
